Chapter Twenty-One - Victims
"We didn't ask to be attacked- we're the victims, not the enemy."
__
By the end of the day, Abby had little fight left in her. All she wanted to do was go home and cuddle with Nugget- Aizawa's cat.
Then Ururaka opened the door, and Abby remembered what was coming. "What the heck?!"
A large group of students stood outside the door, blocking the only exit. Ururaka took a step back, clutching her hands on the straps of her backpack.
Abby grimaced as she packed her bag, working slowly. She hoped the more time she took, the sooner the students outside would all leave. We're not a new attraction at the zoo. She thought with a frown. Just because of what they've been through doesn't mean they should be treated differently.
"It's pointless to try, so why don't you just fuck off, ya goddamn mob."
Kayla frowned and stepped from her desk, about to step in and stop Bakugo from saying anything else, but stopped when Kirishima put his arm out.
He gave her a small, mediating smile.
She steps back and huffs, crossing her arms as she frowns. As much as she wants to step in she knows that it won't change anything, and may just make it worse.
"I came to see what you kids are made of, true, but I didn't think you'd be this arrogant." A head of purple moved to the front of the group, "Are all the kids enrolled at the department of heroics this way?"
Bakugo fumed as the boy spoke, clearly ready to start throwing punches if he didn't stop talking soon.
"I'm a bit disillusioned. So that's it, huh? There are lots of kids who wind up..."
The words began to muddle as Abby stared at her desk, stomach tying in knots. Her heart knocks down in her chest as Shinso continued going on. Her throat constricted as the mood in the classroom changed. Everyone was beginning to understand that this publicity was not the best for them, and it may have given them more enemies than friends.
"Hey!! You!!"
Abby flinches from the volume change, shrinking in on herself as her breath catches.
"I heard you knocked around with villains or whatever so I came to hear it direct!! But I don't wanna hear from some snot-nosed punk!!!"
Before anyone can do anything, a quiet voice cut through the short silence.
"We didn't..."
She doesn't know what's come over her, but words are slipping out of her mouth before she can stop them.
"We didn't ask to be attacked- we're the victims, not the enemy." She chokes out. "It's not our fault."
Before anyone could say anything, she gathered her things and left. With a quick, quiet apology, she's out the door. She has to see Recovery Girl.
Kayla can feel her heart squeeze at the sight of her friend scurrying out of the classroom. Her anger spikes and she steps forward, "What is wrong with all of you?" She spits. "Just because we were attacked by villains doesn't mean we deserve to be treated like this! We didn't ask to be attacked, we didn't even know what was happening!"
