Limerence

Limerence is a state of mind which results from a romantic attraction to another person and typically includes obsessive thoughts and fantasies and a desire to form or maintain a relationship with the object of love and have one's feelings reciprocated.

As the sun reached for its bed beyond the horizon,
I hugged the warmth of my soft blanket.
In the soft flicker of the blue candlelight,
holding the arm of an old book, I strolled late into the night.

Heavy, she felt with the wisdom she held,
she held the scant smell of memories.
Dressed in pages brown with age,
the calloused rough edges of past.
We spent the night lost in each other's arms.

We traveled together to faraway lands.
We laughed, we cried, feeling suns and sands,
sometimes with fairies and sometimes alone;
together we let slip away from reality's hands.

Then she paused,
The last pages torn, she held me in a daze,
I scrambled in search of missing pain,
But the sun had set and melancholy rained.

There lay hidden an old folded page,
Within it, I found a colorless image;
beautiful eyes and sad grey eyes,
'Miss You!'
Someone had scribbled behind in blue.
I felt its touch, my heart in shivers,
This was but the beginning of an affair.

I wiped the photo, dusted the history,
and in the dim candlelight, read her story.
In hope of love, she must have lived,
'til, he left her for the infinite skies.
And alone she wept with the book on her thighs,
'til age raced ahead and her heartbeat had died.

The clock stopped ticking,
as time retired to cry.
It must be raining outside,
my roof seems to leak,
strangely, all corners of the room were still dry,
The rain fell only on my eye.

I left the book aside,
pulled my blanket on my eyes.
With a deep sad sigh,
embraced the darkness within;
I called the night to hold me tight.

How do I dream,
When sleep eludes me?
Her colorless memory echoes deep within me.
It was just one lonely night,
when I fell in love at first sight.

Everything since...
...has changed forever!

A little note - The poem has two subjects in Limerence.

First is the girl in the photograph that felt the intense love that lasted her life till she died.

The second is the poet's who is now in love with her 'Limerence' - her longing for love.
