CHAPTER 23: When it's too late for regret

Ulysses woke up after hours of lying down on the floor of his lab, finding Dylan by his side; they both seemed confused, Ulysses had no idea what just happened to him because of that magical item and Dylan was wondering what happened in that lab that looked like a hurricane just went by, the poor one didn't know that the man on the floor was no longer his best friend; Ulysses was no longer himself after that seizer. Dylan thought that Ulysses was trying to kill himself after what happened the last days to his family, so he couldn't handle the excruciating pain. He helped him to stand on his feet and tried to say some motivational words to make him feel better, unfortunately, it didn't go as expected, Dylan was saying "Listen man! I know you are grieved and in so much pain, I could never imagine how you feeling but you have to let it go. We both know nothing can bring back your daughter or your wife...." Before Dylan completed his sentence, Ulysses got so much angry and as the previous time he couldn't control himself, apparently, Hecate's curse was still working, he waved his hand at Dylan's face so he would stop talking and it happened what none of them expected. Ulysses caused Dylan a deep and long scar on his face, they were both shocked, especially Dylan who just got hurt by his lifetime, but Ulysses realized right away that it was because of the magical item that almost killed him, Dylan run away from that man who suddenly become an unstoppable monster. Once he opened the door the shock was even bigger, his eyes opened widely from what he saw, the chaos happening outside there, surprised them both, they saw people running in every direction, looking lost, afraid, and confused; houses destroyed, burning fire all over the streets. Dylan run with all power he had left to save his wife but when he arrived at his front door he saw it on fire, there was nothing left there but the ashes of his love, he couldn't find his wife, but he kept looking around for her, his face adopted a shocked-afraid face, hiss skin was tingling and his tears were welling up in his eyes while he was covering the harrowing scar on his face. As for Ulysses the view of the city falling down and dying people he spots with his concerned eyes brought back some painful memories, he remembered his daughter dying in his arms and the wife who killed herself because of his horrible mistake, at that moment he knew what happened to his lab, he knew that the government didn't have enough weapons to start a war so they must have taken his new machine and somehow used it as a weapon to kill people. He went back to his place to find out that the machine was gone, then all his fears come true, they took it while he passed out, he suddenly felt some memories and flashbacks pumping in his brain, some spells were in his mind which were definitely not his, he realized that the magical item was the reason, he felt so strong and some powerful energy running in his veins, so he immediately knew he was the only one who can stop that chaos. Ulysses separated the villages and spelled the curse that he thought would stop everything; oblivion and sterility, like that they will never know what happened to them and they will never try to kill each other because they will realize that they're the last ones. He was the reason to start the war and he was also the one who stopped it. Then he knew there was nothing left for him in that city so he was just about to escape the city of anger so no one could find him and he did but not as planned. While he was packing he found an old letter that he forget to read, it was from a mistress he used to be with, as he broke Hecate's heart he broke hers too, although the only difference this time was that she was pregnant with his child, in the letter he just found out that he was going to be a father of a beautiful healthy boy but the women couldn't take care of him, so she hoped that he was going to read the letter before she gave him away but Ulysses was too late, she gave him to a wealthy family that could not have children so that they could take care of him properly. While he was reading that letter, Ulysses suddenly had the urge to look for his child and have another chance in parenting; he was willing to do whatever it takes to look for the kid but unfortunately, the past was still hunting him. Hecate never left the city she wanted to make sure her plan worked well, she was definitely stronger than him so the curse didn't work on her. However, she was there when he was reading the letter she knew that he wanted to take a chance to find happiness again and she couldn't leave him to do that, she still wanted him to suffer and never know what it feels like to be happy for the rest of his life. Hecate kidnapped Ulysses and took him to a cave in the middle of an unknown mountain far away from everyone, she barely kept him alive because she knew once he's dead his suffering will die with him, and to make sure no one would find that old man she hid the mountain from everyone's sight she tortured him until he begged her to kill him but he forgot that because of his uncontrolled desires, he broke her heart and destroyed every jot of mercy and affection she used to have, he had to handle the consequences of his actions. Ulysses wasn't as strong as Hecate so all his attempts to escape were doomed to failure.
