LOLA JAMES WAS stressed, sleep deprived, and overworked, and it was only Tuesday. Diner business was blooming as usual, and school got harder and harder as Lola made it to the end of her Junior year.

"Bless you." Lola said to Lorelai as she walked past the Gilmore's table while carrying a bunch of plates to serve to customers.

"Hey." Jess's girlfriend walked up to the counter, he short blonde hair bouncing with each step she took.

"Hey." Jess barely looked at her, focusing on his book that was in front of him.

"So?"

"One sec."

"Jess." The girl whined.

"Relax." Jess scoffed and Lola rolled her eyes. "Got a problem?" Jess turned to Lola.

"No problem. It's just when you work at a diner, your job is to actually do work, not hook up with girls left and right. But enjoy yourselves!" Lola snarked as she wiped down the tables.

Jess just rolled his eyes. "I'm out. Let's go."

Tania had asked Lola and Luka to run to the store before their family movie night, and after a lot of complaining, the two agreed.

"Doing a little shopping?" Jess approached Lola, ignoring Luka who was standing behind her.

"Yes." Lola rolled her eyes, and Jess put his hand on the shelf so his hand was blocking the isle, making it so Lola couldn't walk past him. "Excuse me."

"Why the cold shoulder?" Jess wondered, wanting to know why she was avoiding him ever since she got back.

"No cold shoulder. I just have perishables here." Lola gestured to her basket and Jess rolled his eyes.

"Oh yeah, you wanna get home before that beefaroni goes bad." He nodded. "How was Italy?"

"Fine." Lola shrugged.

"As entertaining as this is, I'm going to be outside. Please, take as long as you'd like." Luka told Lola with a fake smiled on his face. Lola waved sarcastically as her brother left.

Jess turned back to Lola. "Do anything interesting?"

"Nope." Lola shook her head.

"Okay."

"What about you?" Lola turned to Jess.

"What about me?" He shrugged.

"Anything interesting happen?" Lola squinted as she started at Jess, as if it would help her understand him better. "This summer, I mean."

"Nope." He shook his head.

"Really?"

"Really." Jess repeated.

"So nothing happened this summer, at all?"

Jess sighed before saying, "it was hot. Two weeks ago there was a run on snowcones. Machine broke, people went crazy, Taylor tried to call in the National Guard, but –" Jess knew what she was trying to get out of him, but he enjoyed when she got annoyed at him. It was just too easy.

"I'm not talking about snowcones." Lola rolled her eyes.

"What are you talking about then?"

"Nothing."

"Her name's Shane." Jess gave in, and Lola let out a sarcastic laugh.

"As in 'come back'?"

"Yup." Jess nodded.

"Well, great. That's great. Really, it's great." Lola smiled, but it wasn't sincere at all.

"So I've heard." Jess snarked back.

"Well, it is."

"Are you upset about something?" Jess asked, and he knew the answer.

"No."

"I mean, me and Shane -" Jess started, only to get interrupted by Lola.

"What about you and Shane?"

"I don't know, it didn't exactly bring a smile to your face."

"Well, I'm still freaked out about the, uh, snowcone machine." Lola said sarcastically.

"Okay."

"I could care less about you and Shane."

"Good."

"It just surprised me, that's all."

"Why?"

"Because."

"Because why?"

"Because of what happened at Sookie's wedding."

"Ah." Jess nodded.

"Yeah, so me coming back here and just seeing you with Shane just kind of threw me for a sec."

"I'm sorry, did I hear from you at all this summer? Did I just happen to miss the thousands of phone calls you made to me, or did the postman happen to lose all those letters you wrote to me? You kiss me, you tell me not to say anything...very flattering, by the way. You go off to Italy... then nothing. Then you come back here all put out because I didn't just sit around and wait for you like Jude would've done?" Jess paused his rant to take a breath. "And yeah, what about Jude? Are you still with him? 'Cause last time I checked, you were, and I haven't heard anything to the contrary. Plus, the two of you walking around the other day like some damn Andy Hardy movie. Seemed to me like you're still pretty together. I half expected you to break into a barn and put on a show."

"When did you see me with Jude?" Lola demanded.

"At that stupid summer insanity plea the town put on." Jess scoffed.

"Oh, I'm surprised you could see anything with Shane's head plastered to your face." Lola snapped.

"You didn't answer me." Jess pointed out and Lola looked at him in confusion.

"About what?"

"Did you call me at all?" Jess asked.

"No." Lola sighed.

"Did you send me a letter?"

"No."

"Postcard?"

"No." Lola shook her head.

"Smoke signal?" Jess asked sarcastically.

"Stop." She rolled her eyes.

"A nice fruit basket?" Jess smirked when he saw how annoyed Lola was getting.

"Enough!" Lola almost yelled.

"Are you still with Jude? Come on, Lola, yes or no are you still with Jude?" Jess asked impatiently.

"Yes, I'm still with Jude, yes!" Lola exclaimed.

"Glad to hear it." Jess nodded.

"Glad to tell you." Lola snapped.

"See you around." Jess waved sarcastically.

"Whatever." Lola rolled her eyes.

"Right back at ya." Jess walked away from the girl, and she payed quickly before walking out to meet her brother.

"Hey, I was just gonna come in after you. You all done?"

"Oh yeah, I'm done." Lola nodded, and the two walked off together.
