JESS FELT HORRIBLE. He had hurt the only person he actually cared for in Stars Hollow. Mentally and physically. The second he swerved, he knew he was leaving. Of course he blamed himself, it was his fault. He knew he'd be the talk of the town and he just couldn't face it.
He couldn't face Lola after he hurt her.
So he went to the place where he had all the happy memories. The bridge. He hesitated before pulling out a pack of cigarettes that had been stuffed in his coat for too long. Lola had told him not to smoke. She thought it was gross.
So, of course, he stopped. "As you wish," he had said. He would do anything for her. Even though he had only known her for five months, he would never tell her this, but she was his best friend. Jess didn't ever have a best friend. Unless you count books.
Jess pulled out a cigarette and his lighter, and cursed himself before lighting it and inhaling. He smiled softly at what Lola would say if she saw him here, wallowing. He didn't want to think about Lola anymore.
Jess didn't look up when he heard footsteps nearing him on the bridge. He knew who it was. He just didn't expect Luke to take his side.
"I made sure she was okay." Jess whispered.
"I know." Luke said. Jess took another puff, wondering if Tania or Sage was looking for him. Wondering if Lola was mad. Or sad. Or both. He didn't blame her.
But what he did do was get on a bus to New York. And yet again, Jess had sabotaged himself. But this time was different. This time Jess knew exactly what he was doing.
