LOLA HADN'T TALKED to Jess in one week and four days. Way too long for her liking. When she first got her cast, she wasn't mad at him. She didn't think it was his fault. But when he didn't even call or reach out, she began to be upset and mad at the boy. He asked if she was okay the second they crashed, but that was it. He just left. No goodbye, no "I'm sorry", and it just wasn't fair.

"Can you get that?" Tania turned to Lola as the home phone rang. Lola nodded and walked over to the ringing phone, and picked it up.

"Hello?" She answered, waiting for the other person to talk so she could see if she knew them or not.

"Hi." The voice on the other end said. Jess's voice. Lola didn't respond. "Hello?" Jess asked, wondering why the line was silent.

"Hi." Lola sighed, looking over at her mother who was working.

"Is this a bad time?" Jess wondered.

"Um, no, just hold on a sec?" Lola told him and walked upstairs to her room, closing the door behind her. "Hi."

"You said that already." Jess said, and she could almost hear his smirk through the other end.

Lola nodded, even if he couldn't see her. "I did. You're right, sorry."

"So, what's up?" Jess said casually.

"Nothing." Lola said, sitting down on her wood floor. "What about you?"

"Same." Jess nodded.

"So, what have you been doing?" Lola tried to start a conversation, but she just wanted to see Jess in person. She didn't want to talk on the phone with him. She needed to see him face to face.

"Nothin' much. Just hanging out... in the park, mostly." Jess told her, leaning against the pay phone he was using.

"Central Park?" Lola wondered.

"Washington Square Park." Jess said.

"Oh." Lola nodded.

"It's cooler."

"Yes."

"It's where David Lee Roth got busted." Jess said, not coming up with anything else to talk about.

"Right, right. I hope he's got it together now." Lola joked.

"Sounds like you got a party going on there." Jess said, referring to the music blasting in the background. Apparently it helped Luka study.

"No, it's just me, Luka and my mom."

"Right." Jess paused. "Okay, well, I'm gonna go. This is long distance."

"Yeah, it is long distance." Lola sighed, desperately wishing it wasn't.

"So, see ya."

"Yeah, see ya." And as Lola hung up the phone, she felt tears well up in her eyes.
