They sat in awkward silence for a few minutes. Natalie listened to the music and conversations overlapping throughout the restaurant whilst Jack smoked his cigar. She slyly examined him. His sandy hair, grey eyes, and slim figure. Jack finally said, "So you said something about not needing a man by your side?". "Look don't get me wrong... I love men. I think men are the coolest. But you don't really need them to live." Natalie replied. Jack laughed and said, "Hmm, interesting view on males." Jack said and blew out cigar smoke. Natalie didn't know what to say so she just sat there awkwardly.
For the rest of the evening, they ate and talked about this and that. Natalie came home feeling good. She hadn't been on a date in a while and even though it was awkward at first, she had a fun time talking to Jack. He was witty and very smart. She knew she wanted to see him again.
*two weeks later*
"Don't forget Charles and Sarah are coming over for dinner tonight!" Natalie's mother said at the breakfast table. "What time, hun?" Natalie's father chimed in. "Six." Natalie took a grapefruit from the table and began to eat it. "Natalie who will you be bringing to the wedding?" her mother asked. "I'm not sure yet. Maybe I'll come alone..." Natalie said jokingly. Her mother looked at her as if she just told her she was seriously ill. "I was just kidding, Mother." Natalie quickly said. "Oh, Thank God!" her mother exclaimed looking pale as ever. "Why don't you bring Joe's boy?" her father asked. "Jack?" Natalie replied. "Yes! That would be a great idea!" her mother said. "Oh well, i don't know... but i'll think about it." Natalie said."Hey little sis!" Charles said. "Charles!" Natalie exclaimed and hugged her brother. "Hi Natalie! It's good to see you!" said his fiancé Sarah. "It's good to see you to Sarah!" she replied. "Sarah, good. Come we need to pick out China Patterns for the wedding!" her mother chimed in and swept Sarah away. Her father went to the store to get some whiskey so Natalie had some time to talk with her brother, alone. "So it's been a while since I've seen you!" he said as he made them martinis. "Yes, it has! So are you nervous for the wedding?" Natalie asked. "A little, but I love Sarah so what's their to be nervous about?" he replied. "Oh, to be young and in love." Natalie said and laughed.
