July 1949
After the photo shoot and dinner, Jack went back to Washington, D.C. Some two weeks passed, and he sent Natalie a letter inviting her to come stay with him. He'd been really busy in the Senate and didn't have time to come back to Boston before that.
After Natalie got his letter, she started packing. She was surprised that he invited her to stay with him, but still accepted his proposal. The next day she started driving to Washington. The drive was seven hours long and by the time she got to the city, she was exhausted.
Jack lived a little past the center of D.C., in Georgetown. It was a very charming area. His apartment was an old red brick building with a green door.
Natalie rung the doorbell and it opened almost instantly. "Hey, kid!" Jack said. "Hi Jack." she replied. "Come on in! I'll get your stuff." he said. Natalie walked into his home. It wasn't very big, but it was charming. There were papers all over his desk and it was kind of a mess, but she didn't mind.
"How was your drive?" he asked carrying in her luggage. "It was fine... the views were fantastic!" she replied. "So, not to be blunt but, umm... why did you invite me here? I mean... we're not getting married yet." she said, sitting down on his sofa. "I know, but I thought you might want to see my place and D.C. before the wedding. Plus... I missed you." he said. Natalie felt her self blush. "Oh. Well... I missed you too." she replied.
They sat in silence for a couple of minutes until Natalie asked, "How's it going at the Senate?". "It's going." he said unenthusiastically. "Yes, I can tell by all of your paper work." she answered and chuckled. Jack got up and poured himself and Natalie drinks.
"I've had so much work lately." he said. "Well, I suppose that's what comes with being a Senator." she replied. "Unfortunately." he said."By the way, did your father tell you how many people are attending the wedding?" Natalie asked. Jack handed her the drink. "He sure did. I'm not surprised though. The extravagance is nothing new with him." he replied. "Hmm. Well my mother couldn't be happier." she said. "Hey, at least someone is enthusiastic about it! But on the other hand, maybe a big wedding is a good thing." he replied. "Maybe." Natalie said.
Natalie could see Jack was fidgeting in his chair and could hear him groan. "Jack, you okay?" Natalie asked. "Yeah I'm fine." he replied.
They continued talking and after that Natalie got up to get her stuff organized. "Son of a bitch!" Jack exclaimed. "Jack, what's wrong?!" Natalie asked. "It's nothing. It's just my damn back!" he said as he struggled to get up from the chair.
"Let me help you." Natalie said. "No it's fine." he replied. "Jack!!" she exclaimed. "Ok fine. Go get my shot from the cabinet." he told her. "What do I do next?" she asked. He pointed to his back. "What if I hurt you?" she asked. "You won't." he replied. She could see he was gritting his teeth. Natalie quickly gave him the shot on his lower back.
He instantly relaxed in the chair. "Thank you, kid." he said. "Anytime. Come on, you should lay down."
Natalie helped him get up and he pointed her to his bedroom. Jack was still in his suit and tie, so Natalie tried to look for something more comfortable for him to wear. "Where do you keep your normal clothes?" she asked. "Normal clothes?" he asked and laughed. "You know... your none Senate ones." she replied. "Closet on the right." he said and smiled. She found a sweater and kakis for him to put on. "Here. Change into this. I'll wait outside." she said and left the room so he could change.
"You can come in now." Jack said and smirked. He was still shirtless. "Jack! Quit fooling around." Natalie said and laughed. She could feel herself blush again. He slipped on the sweater and said, "So what do you want to do next?" Jack asked. "For now, how about you just relax." Natalie said. "Fine." he whined.
"Can you at least come sit next to me?" he asked and looked at her with puppy eyes. "Alright..." she replied. Natalie walked over to the other side of the bed. "How are you feeling?" she asked. "Better." he replied. "How often does this happen?" "Once a week at least." he said. "Oh my gosh! You poor thing! Your mother was right." Natalie said. "Oh please! You're over exaggerating." he replied. "I am not! You have to take care of yourself Jack!" she said, with seriousness in her voice.
In that moment Jack realized that this was the woman he wanted by his side. He hadn't thought about it before but the way she cared for him, and everything about her made him want her even more. Especially the fact that she didn't fall at his feet just like all the other girls
Natalie noticed his hair was all scruffy because of the ordeal and there was some hair drooping over his eye. She carefully dared to move it aside for him. For the first time she looked him in the eyes. Truly. She continued to fix his hair for him. Jack was always careful about his hair and didn't like when people touched it, but when Natalie did it, it reminded him of when his mother used to caress his hair when he was sick.
Jack couldn't take it anymore. He leaned in and kissed her. Finally.
