As Natalie sat in the cold hospital hallway biting her nails, she felt as if she'd failed Mrs. Kennedy and broke the promise she had made to always care for Jack.
She knew she did everything in her power to help him, but still felt as if she could've done more.
However, when she found out Jack's mother refused to come to the hospital, her feeling of failure quickly turned into anger.
"What do you mean she won't come?", she asked Mr. Kennedy.
"Look Natalie, Rose has lost two of her children and already watched Jack almost die twice. It's just too much for her." he replied with an almost trembling voice.
"Jack needs her. She is his mother and he might be dying right now." Natalie said angrily.
"I know. But I cannot force her to do anything." he replied.
"Well then I will call her." Natalie stated.
"Hello? Mrs. Kennedy this is Natalie"
"Hello Natalie. What can I do for you?", Rose replied hesitantly.
"I just wanted to let you know that your son is in the hospital in critical condition." Natalie stated coldly.
"Yes. I am aware... I will send a priest for anointing of the sick." Rose replied with no emotion in her voice.
"You mean to say you aren't going to come and be here for your son?" Natalie asked. She was fuming.
"Natalie. I have already been through this twice and almost a third time with Jack a few years ago. I cannot bear to go through it again. Give him a kiss from me." Rose said with a shaky voice and hung up.
Natalie could not believe what she'd just heard. In that moment she realized what kind of a mother Rose really was. She realized that she hadn't broken the promise she'd made. And if anything, Rose was the one who broke it. Because she too had a responsibility to care for Jack.
