23. We are losing to the damn skeleton I was supposed to get engaged to.

Ash took one look at our embrace and screamed. That made my nerves kick in and I pulled my hand and backed away. The skeleton immediately stood up and began to advance me holding his other skeleton hand over the ring protectively.

"How is he moving?" I squeaked. Mavis shrugged. Very helpful. Ash just ran around in circles making me feel dizzy. Also very helpful. I turned back to the skeleton.

"Uh, hi......I'm sorry. I thought you were dead."I almost felt like clapping myself on the back with sarcasm. What a perfect way to get a skeleton on your side. The skeleton thought so too.

It went from being a ring protector to a rib fighter. Meaning he put his hands into himself and dragged out two ribs. He was armed now. I wasn't really too worried about it anymore. I mean any moment now and his body would fall apart right? That didn't happen.

It took a step closer and then I got scared. It seemed to be fine even with two missing ribs and even if the ribs didn't look sharp they would definitely be able to knock us out. I tried for another attempt to get on the skeleton's good side.

I held out the peace sign. Maybe it didn't know sign language or maybe it just really badly wanted to use its own ribs as weapons because it gave a battle cry of war and hit me hard on my right shoulder with its rib.

It was unexpected and I crumpled to the ground. I rolled aside in time as he hit the ground exactly where my gut had been a millisecond ago. Mavis suddenly looked like she was going to be helpful, because I was sick of rolling around like some underground mole.

She looked at the skeleton carefully and then slowly started to transform. I had seen her doing it before but it was still amazing. Her features began to fade and I actually watched her skin slowly thinning out and disintegrating. It looked awful to be honest. Her clothes hung off her skeleton frame. Cargo pants and a grey tank top.

She took out two of her own ribs and started fighting. Just a warning to the readers, you'll aren't going to hear what you'll want to hear. You want to hear that the fight was remarkable and they could fight equally amazingly and it was really hard to pick the winner but it was so entertaining you wouldn't really mind how long it took. Sorry to break it to you but that ain't gonna happen.

Their fighting sucked. It was completely boring. Picture a ballet dancer doing her routine and occasionally putting some fencing steps into it. That's what the fighting reminded me of. Their rib bone hits were like petting the next door neighbors' dog Benji or something. Not cool.

Finally something interesting began to happen. Mavis managed to grab the ring off its finger and she put it on. As if she completely knew what she was doing, she pointed the ring towards the skeleton. I don't know if it was just my imagination but I actually thought I could see milky white streaks coming out of the skeleton. Its soul was being drained out. Of course. Mavis was a genius. Anima mea ring. Ring of souls. It was literally a soul sucking ring. The skeleton's bones dropped to the ground. Lifeless. Just the way it should be.

Mavis slowly expanded back into human form getting flesh and muscles fitting into her clothes properly. You must be wondering about Ash. I was wondering about her too. I looked around and face palmed. She was hiding behind a surprisingly small rock covering her eyes like, 'if I can't see them. They can't see me.'

"Thanks for being brilliantly helpful." I told her and she gave a thumbs up from behind the rock.

Mavis came to me removing the ring from her finger and I went up to her and formally shook her hand.

"The bone fighting sucked but grabbing the ring was smart."

She smiled at me rather coolly. "Sed estis sermo. Nulla actio."

Ash scowled. "Hey, that's a bit mean."

I looked around immediately. "What did she say?"

Mavis seemed shocked that Ash could understand her. Then her expression cleared and she hung her head. "Look I'm sorry. I'm just annoyed at myself for not doing anything sooner and just watching the skeleton almost pulverize Alex."

I didn't care what she was saying now. "Ash what did she say?"

Ash sighed. "You are but words. No action."

I wasn't mad per say because part of me felt like she was telling the truth but the truth was kind of humiliating so obviously I felt a little betrayed. I tried for a weak smile.

"There's some truth in that."

Mavis looked guilty. "No, no I'm sorry" she said and handed me the ring. "Because I might........you know."

"Go cuckoo and insult my hair. Yeah you might." I said possibly slightly cruelly. Sue me. She handed me the ring. She had done a lot for us so far, I admired the fact that she was able to part with the prize she had won herself. But she could always turn against us and that wouldn't work too well.
