24. Ash's foot should be the main character.
"How do we get out?" Mavis asked.
"I know." Ash said suddenly deciding that it was time to be helpful. "I'll stand on Mavis, Alex stands on me. Then he gets up and since he has the arm strength he can pull us up."
I grinned flexing my arm muscles. "You never told me I had arm muscles." I said teasingly and she gave me a push. Mavis was having problems of her own.
"No, I'll go first. I can turn into one of Violet's guards or something. Then I'll have enough strength to pull you'll up."
I shook my head.
"Why not?" She asked her eyes flashing like an angry cat. I could almost picture a tail waving around in the air.
"Just no." I said sighing. She bit her lip and I thought she was going to cry. Instead she started yelling at me, shouting into my face. Ugh saliva. Yuck.
"Alex, I just risked my freaking life to save your ass. Why can't I go up first? This place is freaking me out. Can't you trust me?"
"No." Ash said simply, softly and sympathetically. Impressive. Three emotions brought out by a single syllable.
Mavis took a deep breath and calmed down. "Ugh. I'm so screwed up. I hate not being trusted. And the worst part is I can't even trust myself."
Ash gave her a hug. I was surprised. Ash never hugged anyone unless she really felt attached to them. "As long as you don't kick me or insult Alex's hair, I guess you are on our side."
I smiled sweetly at them and drenched my voice with sarcasm. "Ok girls, now that we have finally figured out the steps for our gymnastic pyramid routine, shall we begin? Or do you guys wanna hang around backstage and socialize and get to know each other?"
The look both of them gave me could've made Violet's previously blonde hair sizzle black again. Mavis stood underneath the hole with her knees bent slightly to help to Ash clamber onto her shoulders. But then we realized that I couldn't clamber onto her shoulders afterwards. So we decided another way and me and Ash could relate to it. Why? it was related to Ash's feet. Honestly sometimes I feel like Ash's feet should be the ones telling the story. What am I even doing here?
She got onto my shoulders and apologizing to Mavis, I got onto her shoulders. While Ash begun to stand she pulled my hair for extra support and tears sprung into my eyes. My scalp felt like it was peeling off. Finally her grip vanished and I realized she had got to the top.
The weird thing was this actually reminded me of some talent show, probably because we were under a dark hole which was bringing in moon light that fell upon us like a spotlight.
Ash reached down and pulled me up. Mavis was left down. I called down to her, "Can you turn into a skeleton?" She held up a thumbs up.
Then I held Ash by her feet and lowered her down. She held the skeleton which weighed almost nothing. I could easily pull them both up and finally all of us were lying on the ground panting.
The sun was beginning to come up from the east and the sky was beautiful. Dark with little orange and red streaks running. I struggled to my feet and helped the girls up.
We were heading towards the palace. I assumed Violet would've regained consciousness and gone back there. Her home. It felt like our home too. That's the impression it gave me when I saw it again. A tall whitish grayish blackish building. Looked more of a prison than a palace.
Entering the palace was cakewalk. I don't know if you can even call it a palace, entering was so easy. Mavis started going on about how getting in was supposed to be easy but leaving was supposed to be the objective. Yeah, she actually used the word objective and me and Ash exchanged glances, bored to death.
Mavis as you can guess was not pleased with our poor ability of concentration but I pointed out the fact that we had never gone to school and ever had to tolerate any history teachers so she gave up with an utterly disgusted expression. I'm definitely not complaining though.
