today was the day, the day meredith's american surgery career was going to blossom. she finally gained the confidence to tell richard about her situation and ask for an attending spot. after some motivation from derek and cristina for the past week, she decided it was the right thing to do.
as she walked into the hospital, dressed in a peachy pink pant suit with a black tank top underneath, her hair curled, nurses stared at her wondering why she was so dressed up. in the elevator bailey gave her the deadliest stare, she had been pondering meredith's secret disappearance and now why she looked like she was going to a job interview at her own job.
"you're awfully dressed up today dr. grey don't you have rounds in an hour?" bailey said with her with a stern tone
"um no, i have to speak with the chief i promise i'll make it in time for rounds," meredith said covering up the fact that she might be walking out of the chief's office as an attending
"you better," bailey bit back as meredith arrived at the chief's floor

richard webber was always fond of meredith, he was the one who took care of her whenever ellis left her in galleries and even storage rooms sometimes. she was a smart little one, a spitting image of her mother, the last time he saw her was before ellis ran off to boston. after all those years, he was impressed at how meredith came especially following her mother''s footsteps.
"hello meredith, what can i help you with?"
"you might want to get comfortable, i have a lot to tell you," meredith watched richards face turn worrysome
"what happened? is there something wrong?"
"well when i came here it was because i had to move from the UK to Seattle in order to care for my mother," meredith had to tell richard about ellis, it was unavoidable
"well what's wrong with your mother? i thought she was traveling"
"no dr. webber, my mother has early onset alzheimers, she is in a nursing home and left me to care for her"
"meredith why didn't you tell me sooner, i could've helped,"
"it's fine her will is very straightforward i just have to be here just in case, she's very vulnerable"
"which nursing home?"
"roseridge, anyways that's not why i'm here today, i'm asking you for an attending position. it really doesn't matter which specialty, i specialize in four"
"meredith you are an intern, is this some practical joke?"
"no, i know this seems crazy but i am a surgeon that specializes in neuro, fetal, ophthalmics, and general. i graduated harvard early at the age of 14, i then waited a year before going to oxford for medical school in which i also graduated early at the age of 19 and then matched at St. Thomas. i completed a european medical internship and residency completing all four of them in two years. as i eased into becoming an attending i was called to care for my mother, that was when she emailed you for an internship for me here. during the two weeks that i left, they weren't for family reasons, i went back to practice medicine in the UK which i was promoted to chief of neuro. after sorting everything out with the American Board of Surgery and taking the boards, they allowed me to become an American surgeon. i'm sorry for lying to you but i really need this job, i understand if you don't want to give me a position though."
"so your telling me you're a quadruple surgeon back in Europe?" richard was shocked, he knew meredith was going to be successful but he never thought she would be a chief already at the age of 21.
"yeah, heres my portfolio and studies i did back at St. Thomas, there's lots of neuro and fetal. you can also email chief burton if you don't believe me. oh and i even have a british accent i picked up," meredith stopped doing her american accent and revealed her real voice. she was now even more desperate and nervous than she was before, she knew this was a lot for richard to take in.
"oh no i believe you meredith, it's just that i don't know why you didn't tell me sooner. the chief of fetal did quit last week for a private practice so i could maybe put you in the running, but i have to review your resume and research first.
"that is totally fine with me, can i get privelages though, i know it is a lot to ask but i really need to practice medicine"
"yes, you can have privileges just make sure i get to watch one of the surgeries"
"of course dr. webber, thank you again for everything"
"no problem meredith, remember if you or ellis need anything i am right here"
"thank you chief, i'm going to get navy blue scrubs now"
"go ahead grey"
he watched her run out of his office, just like when she was a little kid. he couldn't believe ellis had alzheimers, even when they were together ellis hated speaking about meredith but in the long run she ended up sticking her with her end of life care. she was a confusing woman, but he had to repay her for what he did to her and meredith was now the only way he could.

meredith was ecstatic, not only did she have privileges but she also was in the running for chief of fetal. she ran over to derek who was currently in his office preparing for his next surgery.
"guess who's an attending now and in the running for chief of fetal? this girl"
"he gave you chief of fetal?"
"i'm in the running but i do have privileges, show me where the navy scrubs are i need to cut right now"
"ok ok follow me"
they went over to the attendings lounge where the rest of their fellow surgeons were preparing to go on rounds.
"grey why are you in the attendings lounge you're an intern, go back to the locker rooms," bailey scolded at her
"dr. bailey, i am now a surgeon with privileges in the specialties neuro, fetal, ophthalmics, and general, i am also in the running for chief of fetal. although i was an intern an hour ago, i took my personal problems to the chief and made everything straight with him. the move from the UK to Seattle compromised my medical practices and required me to take the American boards which i passed, hinting my accent that i've been hiding ever since i got here."
bailey stood there silent while teddy, callie, owen, and arizona mouths hung open. derek pretended to act shocked as well, just in case someone suspected the relationship they were in.
"so, where are the scrubs? oh and i need a lab coat," meredith smirked as she turned to derek
"here"
meredith quickly went into the bathroom to change, in the moment she felt like a freaking badass. now she was a chief in Europe and possibly here, which dominated what her mother ever accomplished. she was finally better than her. she was badass.
