growing up, the only words ellis used to say to meredith were to be "extraordinary" or that she was not suited to be an "excellent surgeon" because she was lazy. this was because her mother knew absolutely nothing about her daughter and if she were to become lucid just one of these days, she would be jealous of the kick ass surgeon meredith grey had become.
sitting in her office with her dreamy thing of a neurosurgeon sitting right next to her, meredith was baffled with what she had come up with just a few months into career.
"mini organs derek. mini organs." she knew she couldn't just leave her research in the past, especially now that she was a quadruple surgeon not just in the UK but also in the states.
"mer what if you just applied for that big NIH grant back in the states? it's worth a shot."
"it's not that simple derek, I had the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory waiting on me for months, I can't just pack it up and take it to Seattle just to prove AGAIN to the FDA."
"what if you had both?"
"what do you mean"
"what I mean is that you could finish up with what you started with the regulatory here, present it, and get it approved, then go back to Seattle and get it re-evaluated there."
"so then I'd just have to do the risky trial stuff once and just prove it when I get back."
"exactly"
"but these trials can take years derek and I have two jobs to juggle in different countries. not to mention I am in the running for a chief position back in the states and a chief here."
"i'll help you if you want my help."
"you want in?"
"of course i do, anything to help you. I would also enjoy experiencing living the double life you seem to enjoy."
"behind all of this joy is a 21 year old mess who probably hasn't showered in two days."
"you should freshen up, i'll join you."
"of course but one more thought. are you sure you want in on this trial Dr. Shepherd?"
"no doubt about it Chief Grey."
meredith knew that he wouldn't disappoint, just from working with him for a few months she knew that they would be the perfect kick ass team.

meredith and derek practically ran off the plane into Sea-Tac and hopped into Meredith's Lexus, speeding to tell Richard their proposal.
"you two want to run a whole research study in a whole other country while you're chief of fetal and derek is chief of neuro here?" richard was stunned, he just wanted to celebrate meredith becoming chief of fetal, nothing more and nothing less.
"yes chief. I know that you will have to rely on me a lot with the job offer but I swear I...we can pull it off. I've literally been pulling off this whole double life for almost a year now and derek knows how well I can do it because he's been doing it with me for half of that year."
"well grey, just don't disappoint. and you too shepherd. I don't need my two best surgeons in this hospital to be stolen by some hospital on the other side of the world."
"you'll have our best sir" exclaimed meredith and derek in unison.
the pair agreed to alternate months working at St.Thomas with Seattle Grace and after a long 3 hour conference call between the three in Seattle and Chief Burton they were settled with the plan.
