//  My feet were carrying me across expanses of land. I didn't know where I was going, how far I had run, and where I was right now. But I didn't care. I could see their flashlights bouncing around behind me and I knew I needed to escape.

As I looked back, panting to see if I had created distance between me and the bloodthirsty animals, I stumbled forward, falling into a puddle of water. My face smacked the ground, getting covered in murky water. The nightgown I was wearing was far from neat and I knew in that moment I couldn't outrun them.

Then my gaze lifted and I spotted something in the distance, metallic light bouncing off of the glowing light of the moon. Maybe I could hide.

I picked myself up off the forest floor and heaved myself forward, stumbling through branches and crackling leaves until I saw something in the darkness.

Even though there was a herd of followers behind me, I couldn't help but stand there on the spot, stunned at what was before me.

An overturned car sat there. It looked like it had been there for years, the proof had been the rusted metal on the outside. Then I spotted something on the side and it made my eyes squint momentarily. Claw marks.

I gulped loudly, knowing that no animal could produce such a thing. But as I reached forward to trace the marks with my fingers, my head spun around at the sound of yells behind me and flashlights becoming clearer.

I had to go.

I looked back at the minivan once more before slipping past it and running. Running as fast as my feet could take me. But then I abruptly stopped when I saw something that could help me. A cave, a den.

Albeit, a coyote's den, but still. I'd rather be ripped to shreds by a pack of coyotes rather than go back to that hellhole. I padded barefoot across the dirt before slipping into the cave, bowing my head and being extremely quiet before crouching on the ground and laying back against the dirt.

I was safe, for now.

I soon heard the voices drift past me, they hadn't even bothered to look down here. I stayed a little longer than I should've, but I wanted to feel safe and secure for at least a second. Once I knew they were gone, I let myself cry. The tears poured down my face, mixing with the dirt and water that had splashed across it earlier.

My whimpers filled the space as I pulled my knees to my chest. For some reason, being in this coyote's den had made me feel safer than being anywhere else. But once I opened my teary eyes, I realised the darkness around me had been filled with something I had dreaded.

A set of eyes in the corner of the cave, staring back at me. I gulped back loudly, pressing my hand to my mouth to stop the loud sobs. It was a coyote, just laying there, staring at me. My brows pulled together in confusion as I saw it's electric blue eyes focus on me.

Something about them just...it didn't scare me. It made me feel relieved. Why I had such a comfort to those blue eyes, I had no idea. I mean there was a coyote right in front of me, and I was feeling okay. It didn't growl, it didn't flash it's teeth at me, it seemed conflicted. I mean for one, I was invading it's home.
