After the crazy events of the previous day I hoped that today would be a bit more calm and relaxed. Well as calm and relaxed as this place could get. It was about nine o'clock so people were starting to wake up and coming down to the pool, which meant it wouldn't be long before I'd have to start serving people. Sure enough after about ten minutes I had already made and served about fifteen lots of drinks.
When I had finished making my sixteenth lot of drinks I heard an argument starting in between Mel and the man he was with yesterday. I wasn't sure what they were arguing about but I thought it was best to go and stand by in case a fight broke out. I walk over and stood by Mateo who was a few feet away from me. Once again being his very observant self hasn't noticed and was too busy reading a magazine he kept behind the bar. I nudged him to get his attention and gestured to the argument. He seemed to understand what I meant and walked out from behind the bar with me following.
It was just as a precaution but a few seconds later they began to fight. I say fight it was more pretending to fight actually. The man from yesterday kept doing karate chop actions and other karate moves very badly whilst Mel was being held back by two other people. Me and Mateo rushed to scene. He restrained the larger man whilst I stood between the fighting pair.
"Hey break it up! Break it up now!" I said in a stern voice. It seemed to work because both men stopped trying to fight each other.
"You, fat boy," he said pointing to the man he had previously been restraining. "You caused problems here before I remember". Then he clicked his fingers and pointed away indicating him to do one. I thought back to last year when he had to be dragged out of Neptune's kicking and screaming because he lost at the quiz.
"Yeah, well, keep away from me. Do you hear?" He said pointed a finger threateningly at Mel.
"Keep away!" He said as he did another strange karate movement. Me and Mateo shared a bewildered glance."On yer bike" Mel replied with simply.
"And that goes for Touché turtle in the wheelchair and all" he continued gesturing to the little tanned woman in the wheelchair.
"Yeah you've made your point they'll keep away" I started calmly. I walked closer to him so he could see my stern face. "Now do one please" I said pointing to where he previously was.
"Yes, go with your mummy" Mateo chimed pointing to an elderly lady behind him.
"Alright, I'm going" he turned and began to walk of. "Dickheads" he said turning around at us and doing some strange karate chops. I stamped my foot and pretended I was about to run at him. That made him stumble back and almost fall but it it also got him to go back to where he was. Me and Mateo soon followed to get back to the bar.
On the way we passed the man and his mum. Mateo had decided for some reason to say "you cause trouble again, I throw you out". I rolled my eyes because it had just settled and he went and started to rock the boat.
The mans mum jumped to his defence and pushed him a little. "You can't speak to my son like that". He pushed him a bit more.
"Sorry ma'am but he can't be causing trouble at a family resort" I said trying to calm the woman.
"Yes listen to her fat boy" Mateo said walking closer to the man. Suddenly he jumped up and screamed in Mateos face whilst yet again doing more karate moves. I stood in front of Mateo and did a short scream back at him, getting right in his face. This action made him retreat into his seat. I put my arm around Mateos shoulder and led him to the bar to prevent him from rocking the boat even more.
In the evening I changed out of my uniform and into a grey Bardot shirt that reached my belly button and some black shorts that landed on the the mid thigh. Then I brushed out my hair and let it loose of the ponytail it was in earlier. It fell just below my shoulder blades. When I was ready I left my apartment and made my way to Neptune's. When I arrived Mateo was already there in his typical black shirt and white trousers combo. The evening seemed to be quite normal. Families eating, teens drinking and people doing some karaoke.
However the regular atmosphere soon changed when Mel walked in dressed in full white suit. He paraded over to the table the rest of the family was sitting on whilst the whole of the pub started at him in awe. It was a bit much for a pub but it still looked amazing. I nudged Mateo, who was stood next to me staring at Mel. He turned to me.
"Hey do you reckon you could pull off that look?" I asked him jokily.
He shrugged and replied "I look good anything" and winked at me. We both laughed a little before I spotted someone waiting to order at their table.
On stage the large man that he been fighting with Mel was singing the song pop musik. He wasn't very good and was doing very exaggerated dance moves which made him look like a chicken walking on fire. He butchered his way through the song and at the end struck a stupid pose and acted like he had just received a noble peace prize. He exited the stage after a long while and Mel came on along with Janie.
"There you go that's Geoff with Pop Muzik" at least now I knew his name. "Cracking straight on we've got got Mel singing Lonely Girl. Let's hear it for him". Applause filled the room. At this point everyone seemed to be okay for service so I went to stand with Mateo and enjoy the show.
"Thank you very much. I'd like to dedicate this to a very special lady, who over the past few weeks has made me feel like a very special man" I awed at his words at put a hand over my chest. That was the kind of relationship I wanted. The intro music began playing and Mel readied himself to sing.
Nothing could've prepared us to what we heard. It sounded like he was being hung and shot at the same time. At first I was shocked but then my shock slowly turned into laughter.
Me and Mateo were both trying so hard to keep in our laughter I thought one of us was going to burst a blood vessel. However when he got to the line "every time you pass my way" we just couldn't hold it anymore we burst out laughing. I had to lean on the table we were closed to to prevent me from falling over. Mateo put a hand on my arched back: one to try and calm me down, and two to steady himself too. Just when we calmed down at bit he reached the chorus again which sent us back into our laughing fit.
By the end of the song me and Mateo had laughed so hard we almost needed to call an ambulance to give us oxygen. But still we clapped because as rubbish as it was it gave us a good laugh.
"Thank you. Just before I hand the mic back, there's a small announcement I'd like to make". Suddenly some slow romantic music began playing. I had a feeling I knew were this was going and excitement began to build up in my chest. "As some of you know, yesterday I had an accident in the pool, which nearly took my life".
"Nice safe there buddy" I whispered to Mateo. He smiled as we fist bumped.
"It's times like this it makes you realise that life is not a rehearsal. This is it. And yes, I've made a success of my life. I've got five sunbed shops in Manchester. But I think it was Charles Manson who said, you're not living life to the full of your living it alone. I know my late wife Nerys who died in a crazy paving accident in 1979 will be smiling down on me as I say, Madge Delilah Barron, will you marry me?" I gasped and couldn't help but smile and I think the rest of the room felt the same as everyone turned to look at the woman who had just been proposed too. He looked shocked to say the least.
After a few seconds of anticipation she finally croaked out "yes". Everyone including me clapped and cheered at the happy couple. Mel put the microphone back in the holder and came down of the stage and to Madge. They shared a small kiss whilst we were all still cheering. Then he wrapped one arm around torso and one under her legs to try and lift her up. Clearly he didn't have the upper body strength because it took him about ten tries to lift her out of the wheelchair. When he finally managed to succeed the cheering grew even louder as the two made there way out of the pub. Mel looked as though he was going to pass out but it was still romantic... until he came running back down for Madges chair.
