Today was the first day of the free weeks holiday Janie had promised the guests last year. A few had already arrived but most were coming this afternoon on the coach that drives from the airport to all the big hotels in the area. Mel from last year was planning on having a grand opening of Mels mobility shop tonight so I was getting the evening off. I was currently carrying a tray of abandoned glasses back to the bar when I spotted Geoff from last year putting his towels on a pair of sun beds to reserve them. This was against hotel rules but it was quiet and I knew he had his elderly mother with him. Therefore I decided to let him do it. Mateo who was strutting from the other side of the pool however did not.
"Hey! what are you doing?" he questioned Geoff as he about to walk off.
"Not doing owt" Geoff responded innocently.
"You cannot reserve sunbeds with towels in the morning" he put his hands on his hips and started Geoff down.
"What are you talking about?".
"You have been here before. You know the rules".
"Oh come one! Don't be tight. You know how old me mum is? She needs a sunbed" Geoff frantically told Mateo.
"I don't care if she's 100 years old. These are the rules and if you don't like them you can stay somewhere else" Mateo crossed his arms over his chest. I decided to come forward at this time. I marched over to Mateo and spun him round to face me.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked gesturing to what he had just done.
"Me? He is the one breaking hotel rules. You cannot reserve sunbeds with your towels" Mateo argued. I took in a breath.
"He is reserving one sunbed when no one else is around for his elderly mother who has back problems" I stated slowly.
"Yeah exactly" Geoff backed me up.
"I can see this but they are still the rules" Mateo persisted. I folded my arms and narrowed my eyes.
"Rules?" Mateo nodded. "Im sorry but when you stop hooking up with guests, making bets with them, verbally abusing them and slacking off in the toilets then you can talk to me about rules" I sassed. Mateo looked defeated but kept his position strong. We probably would've stayed there all day glaring at each of Donald and Jaqueline hadn't have shown up."Is everything ok?" Donald asked looking between the three of us.
"It's this one. Daryl Jobsworth" Geoff pointed at Mateo.
"And what seems to be the problem?" Donald stepped closer to Mateo but he stayed where he was.
"You cannot reserve a sunbed with your towel. It's against the rules" he mocked me in the last bit. If looks could kill Mateo would be buried six feet under by now. I took a step forward and was about to speak but was stopped by Donald.
"It's okay he's quite right. We've been coming here for 20 years and the rules categorically state you cannot reserve a sunbed with your towel". He emphasised the word your so I knew he had a plan. Mateo smiled slyly and victoriously at me.
"Thank you".
"Would you like to borrow our towels Geoff?" Jaqueline cheerily asked offering Geoff a black and orange patterned towel. I smirked knowing what they were planning. Geoff didn't catch on though.
"No it's alright I've got a towel. I..." he was cut of by Donald giving him a look and offering him another towel. He caught on now. "All right yeah. Cheers!" Geoff took the towels and moved back to the sunbeds he had reserved. He removed his towels from them and then offered them to the Stewarts.
"Here you go. You can borrow our". Donald took them with hesitation. All three of them began putting each other's towels on their sunbeds. By now I was covering my mouth to prevent a large amount of laughter erupting from it. Mateos confusion didn't help.
"What are you doing?".
"We are reserving our sunbeds with somebody else's towels" Mateo looked so annoyed. "It's called a technicality. Us brits have been winning by them for centuries. Breakfast Geoff?".
"Absolutely" he said in a posh accent. With that the three paraded away to breakfast. I bit my lip and looked to the floor my shoulders lifting up and down from laughter. I took in another deep breath. I looked Mateo in the eye.
"I win" I said simply before I burst out laughing. I put my hands on my knees and bent over from laughing so much. Mateos face of confusion was enough to send me into a fit. He rolled his eyes and turned away from me like a child. Once I calmed down after about 2 minutes I stood up straight.
"Don't worry. I'm sure you'll beat me one day" I said in a baby voice whilst lightly pinching his cheeks. He swatted me away and I picked up my tray and walked of smiling still.
