Mum and I rush through the hospital doors.
"Luke, I don't know what room." Mum says, tears rolling down her face.
"Mum, it's alright. I-I'll go to the nurses station and ask." I leave Mum in the waiting lounge as I find the nearest nurses station.
The closest one is closed for lunch, which means we'd have to go to the next floor.
"Shit." I swear under my breath. I run my fingers through my hair, which has fallen flat, and hold back the tears. I bite at my lip ring, shooting pain to my lower lip.
I walk back to the waiting lounge to my mum.
"What room?" She immediately rises
"I don't know. The damn place is closed for lunch." I don't care if I swear in front of my mother right now. She can kiss my ass and get over it. "We have to go to the next floor."
"Oh, dear." Mum sprints down the hall to the elevator. "Hurry, we're gonna miss it."
She and I both hop on, pressing the number 2. It lights up with a yellow glow.
"These things are so damn slow," I mumble.
"Luke.." Mum sternly says
"I'm sorry, I just need to get to the nurses station."
Once the elevator doors open wide, I hurry off to find the station.
"Thank God!" I proclaim as i see it open.
"How may I help you?" The nurse says with a high pitch tone.
"I'm looking for Samantha Hurt, and Dylan Hurt, please." I say quickly
She narrows her brows a bit, then begins typing. The clicking of the mouse and the keyboard drives me nuts
I ball my hands into a fist. I don't have time to wait.
"Oh, yes." the nurse says. Her face softens. "They're on the emergency floor in room 203."
"Thank you," I say pushing myself off the counter
"But wait," the nurse stands.
My heart races.
"Yeah?" Mum and I both say
"They won't be out of surgery for another half hour. I'm afraid you'll have to wait in the lounge."
"Surgery?" My voice cracks, and my eyes become wet. "Surgery?" I look at Mum.
"Come on," she grabs my arm and pulls me into the elevator. The same yellow light appears as she pushes the big E button.
"Mum, what if they don't make it?"
"Baby, don't say that. They'll be alright."
"No, Mum. They won't. They're in surgery. They'll never be okay." I can't hold my tears back anymore, and begin to cry.
The people at the elevator doors give sad and awkward smiles as we step off.
We walk to the waiting lounge to find their parents and Amy.
"Luke, oh my God." Amy runs to me, wrapping her arms around me.
I wrap mine around hers, and we both cry harder.
"Is she okay?" I ask through tears
"I don't know. Please don't give up hope. Her parents already have. It's just me and you now." Amy squeezes me harder.
"Never." I say as I hug tighter. "I'll never give up hope."
"Luke, son," Sam and Dylan's parents say as they place a hand on my back. "There's little hope."
"No. There's not. You may have given up, but I've not. They're worth waiting for. I'm not giving up."
"Mr. and Mrs. Hurt," the same nurse that called the house arrives, "would you like to see your children?"
"Oh, thank God." They rush to the room they're in.
"Mum, are they going to be fine?" I ask
"I'm sure they will. They're strong, Luke. Very strong." mum walks to the door, peeking in the window.
"What happened?" I ask Amy.
"She slid off the road. A drunk driver was coming head on, and it was either she and Dylan die instantly, or wreck and have little chance of survival. They've broken a few bones." Amy states. "The doctor told us Sam has a broken ribs, a broken leg, arm, and hip. Dylan, however, just has a broken leg and arm. She saved him."
"Oh my..why? Why did this happen?" I slide down the wall, comforted by Amy.
"Hey, it's not your fault."
"Yes it is. If only I were there." I lean my head on Amy's shoulder, leaving tear marks.
"Do you two want to go in," their parents ask, hopeful smiles.
Amy nods, pulling me up. "Come on."
I drag my feet down the hall.
I don't want to.
I don't want to see my princess in the hospital bed. Hurt. Broken.
"Look, she's okay."
Sam has her eyes open, looking around.
Still, the sparkle is there.
"Hey, baby," I say as I rush to her side.
She gives a smile, more beautiful than before.
"Hi," she manages to get out. "I'm sorry."
"No, no. Don't be sorry. I'm happy you're alive," I say, kissing her hand.
"I'm not as fixed as before. I'm broken now. Literally."
"You're still perfect and beautiful to me."
Sam reaches for a hug. "Come on. It won't hurt me. You just can't squeeze like usual."
I laugh and give her a hug and a kiss
"You're still beautiful to me. You're still fixed. You're still strong." I kiss her once more, savoring the moment. "Forever."
