Sam's P.O.V
How do you tell someone you like them? Especially if they're Luke Hemmings. How? I can't answer.
I sigh at Luke's words. These days, 'I love you' means nothing but a statement used to get in your pants. I don't believe Luke, not for that reason, but because he doesn't really know me.
"Luke," I say, pulling my arm back. "I love you, okay? I can't explain it. And probably never can. But..."
"But what," Luke asks.
I swallow hard. "I don't believe you when you say you love me. It's just, you haven't really known me, and you still don't. You never really cared for me before, either. You just now started caring. I'm sorry," I exhale a little breath, then sit on a rock beside the road. To my surprise, Luke sits beside me.
"Hey, I'm sorry. I know I was a huge ass to you before. But that never changed the way I felt about you. I've always cared for you. Even when I was an ass to you, I kept an eye on you. I didn't want anyone to hurt you. Other than me," Luke drapes an arm around my shoulders, pulling me close. "And to this day, I regret it. You're absolutely amazing, and I hate the way I treated you. I went home everyday and beat myself up about it. I wanna take it all back. Unfortunately, I can't turn back time. If I could, I most definitely would."
I cry at Luke's statement. He always knows how to turn a bad feeling into a good feeling, even if it's not 100% true.
"Don't cry. You'll ruin your smile." Luke pokes at my cheeks, causing me to smile. "Ah, there it is." He kisses my cheek.
The one thing I want to say to him I can't. I don't want to ruin our friendship. And that's exactly what would happen if I told him.
"Is there something wrong?"
"No, no. I'm fine. Just thinking." I say with a smile.
"About what?" By this time, Luke has already taken his school bag off, and walking towards the field behind us.
I, slowly, follow.
"Just...thinking." I imply.
Luke takes off his jacket, and spreads it on the field.
"Luke, you're gonna get your jacket dirty." I go to pick it up, but am stopped.
"Don't. Just, lay here with me." Luke lies on his jacket, making room for me. He pats the spot next to him, gesturing for me.
"Luke, I can't." I say. "I don't want to get your jacket dirty. I think maybe we shou-"
"Samantha, please? Would you rather be here, with me, or home, with drama from your parents?" Luke, propped up on one elbow, asks.
His point is pretty clear. I don't want to be home with the drama from my family. I do, however, want to so badly be in his arms. Anywhere. Everywhere. I'd give my all for, and to, Luke.
I set my school bag beside his, and carefully lie beside him.
Once I'm down, he pulls me closer to him.
I feel his body heat, making me warm. It's perfect for this autumn evening. If only this won't get him in more trouble.
"Sam, I have something I really want to tell you, but can't." My heart skips a beat.
"Yeah? What is it?" I nervously ask.
Luke sighs. "I can't tell you, it'll only ruin our friendship."
"Come on, please?" I ask, propping myself up to look at him. I give him a small smile.
Smiling back, he answers, "Fine..I don't want to be just friends anymore, Sam."
I hide the smile on my face. This is what I've been wanting since day one.
"I want to be more. You're the best thing that's happened to me. Yeah, I may have said this To Aleisha, but that was when I was young and nïeve. I don't know what I was, honestly. Can, can you just maybe give me a chance? I promise, I won't hurt you."
I smile.
Nodding, I reply, "Yes, Luke. I'll give you a chance."
Luke takes my face, and kisses my lips. "Thank God. I love you."
"I love you, too, Luke."
Every day with Luke is honestly the best.
