It's the second week of the third month.
Your rut ended three days ago. Hawks always kept his word with paying you physically when he could.
While on break, you decided you'd take him up on his previous offer and headed up to his office. The medical floor had been quiet most of the day so you informed Kiko to page you if she needed help. Otherwise you were going to be elsewhere in the building.
You knock gently on the wood. "Come in!"
Stepping through, you greet the winged hero while he's buried under mountains of paperwork. He spares you a glance and a soft smile. "To what do I owe the pleasure, miss healer?"
Shoulders shrugging with your hands clasped behind your back, you state. "Got bored and missed my favorite birdman."
Spotting a few magazines on the coffee table to the right, you walk over to it and plop on the couch. Taking a magazine in hand and flipping through the pages.
Hawks chuckles, not raising his head from the papersheet when he talks.
"Make yourself comfortable– my nest is your nest." At this comment one of your wings twitches slightly.
Ngh! Don't just say things like that!
The avian part of you threatens to take him entirely too seriously. Heat rising to your cheeks, wings spread behind you, the magazine rises to hide your face as you sink further into the couch. "Way ahead of you."
Some time passes while you listen to the hero's pen scribble on the pages from across the room. It feels calm, peaceful...tranquil. No sirens wailing outside or rampaging villains. All is well in the city... for now.
You take advantage of this opportunity and try to think of something to talk about with Hawks. Something short so you don't distract him for too long. A joke? No, the two of you always do that.
Today, just before you left for work an old man stopped you to ask you a riddle. It was something about a mushroom. Either way, this gives you a bright idea. Working out the exact formation of the question and your answer, you clear your throat when you finally have everything sorted. A clever riddle you're sure he'll solve in no time.
"Hey, I've got a riddle for ya."
"Oh? Riddle huh? Would you like me to solve it for you, kid?"
"Yes actually, it's rather difficult to figure out." It's not.
Hiding your smirk best you can behind the magazine, you lick your lips. "A healer walks into an aviary... Of all of the birds in the sanctuary offered to her, one catches her eye. It is a red tailed hawk. Without a second thought she purchases the hawk that same day. Why?"
Hawks' hand stops writing. He repeats the riddle again in his head. The gears in his mind putting the pieces together. Glancing up at you, he smirks leaning back in his chair. "The answer is obvious. She is a healer right?"
You return his smirk from behind your magazine shield, eyes sparkling just above the pages. "Yes, she's a healer."
"Well, she chose the red tail hawk for that exact reason. She wanted to heal it. Out of all the other birds, she thought that the hawk was the only one that needed her attention. The hawk was the only one that needed her help. There's your answer. It really wasn't that hard, I'm surprised you didn't figure it out on your own, kid." He shrugs his shoulders, and picks up his pen to get back to his work.
