_______
Staring at your phone while curled up in your wings on the couch, you try to come up with a coherent text to send to Hawks, wanting to ask him to hang out with you again.
In a way –with what you have planned– there's no way he won't see it as a date. He'd be rather dense, moronic even, to think otherwise. A part of you wishes he was less keen on perceiving through your words and actions so effortlessly. Another part bids to the high heavens that this man will give in already!

You take a deep breath and sigh through your nose as the blood pumping muscle in your chest beats faster.

You
Hey, been missing my favorite
birdman recently. Whenever you're
free, I was thinking we could
visit this aviary I saw. If not maybe
you'd be up for a relaxing visit at
my place with takeout and
a movie?

Staring at the screen expectantly, you glance away then back.
Nothing.
You assume he's busy with work or a mission. With skeptical optimism, you get off the couch and find ways to occupy your time.
All throughout the day the impulse to check your phone became increasingly sparse. Keeping the news running on the television helped. Every so often you'd hear about the winged hero taking down another set of villains while washing dishes or getting brought up in conversations while you swept the floor. Some new, some– reruns.
Meanwhile, you tended to yourself and your living space religiously. Not one item, feather, or hair out of place. The primal instincts of your brain took over almost completely in an effort to make your home look presentable. In case he says yes, if he says yes.
Several hours pass, the sun begins to set.
With so much free time, you sit down with a notepad, feeling rather creative for someone who recently had a mental breakdown. It's not entirely unlike you, listening to the news for any mention of Hawks while simultaneously using him as inspiration. Perhaps you've fallen back into old habits as a coping mechanism.
Flying higher, falling deeper.
Honey drops for eyes,
heart for a prize.
Windswept sandy waves,
longing in a withdrawn gaze.
Vermillion cascading canopy,
sharp with perceptivity.
Protection at every turn,
his devotion I yearn.
Solace in his embrace,
my distress he erase—
Scribbling out the last line, you rip out the page, crumpling and tossing it across the room. The abrupt noise of your phone makes you jump inside your skin, stomach knotting itself at the familiar chime specifically set for Hawks.
