Chapter 23

“He did what?!” I screamed shooting to my feet.

“Accepted money from me to get you away from Jace so I could have him all to myself,” Lisa repeated.

“You didn’t do it for me at all?!” I asked Alec.

“Audrey, when I made the deal with her I was only thinking of you. I figured she’d help me. I thought you kind of liked him…and with each day it seemed like you liked him even more. I thought I’d need help to get you away,” he sighed.

“Alec…how do you know her?” I asked after I took a deep breath.

            He sighed again. “I…”

“We went on a small meaningless date once,” she said locking her fingers together. “But I’m not interested in him, Audrey, I swear. I love Jace.”

“You went on a date with her…and you didn’t tell me?” I asked crossing my arms. “I thought we told each other everything. I know I told you everything.”

            “Now Audrey—“

“Lisa, don’t. You two were working together. You lied to me, Alec. You freaking lied to me!” I yelled.

            “Audrey, I—“

I stomped off into the back room slamming the door behind me. I went to my bag and pulled out some cash before storming back into the living room. Lisa had her stupid arms around Alec, hugging him. It only fueled my fire.

“I’ll be back later,” I snapped shoving the money into my pocket.

“Audrey, you can’t go out there,” Alec said.

“Jace is searching the entire town for you,” Lisa added.

“Does it look like I care?” I asked.

“Audrey, beautiful, he’ll take you back if he gets the chance,” Alec said softly. I could see the worry in his eyes as he looked into mine.

“Too damn bad,” I snapped walking out, slamming the door behind me. I jogged to the car. “Dammit!” I’d forgotten the keys. I punched the car but kept walking.

It took me ten minutes to reach town. I walked to a small café and ordered a peppermint hot cocoa—my favorite—before going to sit in the back corner with my back to the wall. I looked out the window as the waitress set down my mug. I smiled a thank you at her before she walked off.

“Look who’s here,” a voice said catching my attention. I turned my head to see Allan standing there grinning at me. He pushed his glasses up and sat down across from me. “You’re a bit away from home. Where’s your boyfriend?”

“I don’t know,” I shrugged. “What are you waiting for? Aren’t you going to call Jace and tell him you found me?”

“Only when you are ready for me to do so,” Allan said.

I frowned. “I don’t want to go back there. I just want to stay on my own. I work best on my own.”

            “What happened?” he asked.
