Chapter 20

            “Audrey? Are you okay?” Alec asked walking to stand in front of me.

            I shook my head and put a hand to my mouth. “I’m gonna be sick,” I said running towards the bathroom.

            Alec was in there less than a second after me. He held my hair up out of my face as I puked. I felt hot tears running down my face. When I was done I felt weak…drained.

            “Audrey, let’s get you cleaned up and you can go to bed,” Alec said rubbing my arm.

            He brought a damp towel to my lips and wiped them off. I reached up and flushed the toilet. I stood up and washed my hands. After I was done with that he led me into the bedroom and lied me down on the bed. He sat down next to me and brushed my hair out of my face. “I’m going to call—“

            “No,” I gasped. It wasn’t just that I didn’t want a doctor to see me, I really truly hated doctors. When I was five I got a really bad cold and my mom took me to the doctor’s office and the dude gave me a shot but it was weird and he messed up and I got worse and I had a giant cut on my arm because of it.

            “Audrey, you’re sick. Were you feeling bad before?” he asked.

            “A little, but…not where I thought I’d puke,” I said.

            Alec stood up. “I’m going to go make a few calls,” he said before walking out. I was too drained to call after him. I turned over on my side and listened to his voice as he spoke into the phone.

            “Sir, she showed up here this morning at around four. She’s really sick. I was wondering if you could send a doctor out here to check and make sure she’ll be okay…she just threw up,” he spoke. “Yes sir. Okay sir. Thank you.”

            He walked in a few minutes later. “Sheriff Blakely is coming. He’s bringing the doctor. You’re going to be okay, Audrey. I’ll be here with you the entire time. Remember you got here this morning at around four. You were coming here because you heard I had come to stay here.”

            I nodded. “Okay.”

            “There be here in a couple minutes. Do you want anything?” Alec asked.

            I shook my head and took ahold of Alec’s hand. I squeezed it once and allowed my fingers to relax around his. “Love you.”

            “I love you too, Audrey.”

            “Audrey, beautiful, wake up,” Alec said shaking my shoulder. I opened my eyes and behind Alec was a tall man with white hair and glasses—the doctor. The Sheriff had blonde hair and brown eyes. He was a bit round and he was squinting at me.

            “So you’re Audrey?” Sheriff Blakely asked me.

            I nodded and grabbed for Alec’s hand bringing it to me.

            “Girly I’m afraid you have caused a lot of ruckus,” he said.

            “So how are you feeling now?” The doctor asked me.
