KAILANI WAS THROWN BACK into the room carelessly. Her sore body, still recovering from whatever serum they had used to paralyze her, fell to the ground limply, and she groaned aloud. An unknown liquid pooled from her eyes and down her cheeks, and a moment later the coppery tang of blood met her senses. She slowly reached up and wiped away the wetness, though it just kept coming.

She clumsily slid across the floor and collapsed against the wall that divided her from McCree. She softly called his name, hoping that he would respond. A moment later, he did.

"Kai, is that you?" Relief was evident in his words as she heard him shuffle closer. "Are you okay? What'd they do to ya?"

"J-Jesse," Kailani stuttered out, her voice shaking as her entire body convulsed with panic. Her eyes were burning, blood leaking into her mouth, and she began to waste another unknown chemical. "Jesse, I can't see. I don't know what's happening to me-" Her shoulders shook with sobs as she completely broke down. Her head hung, defeat lacing her words as she continued: "Why don't they just kill me? I'm so tired, Jesse..."

"Hey." The sound of his voice caused her to jump slightly. The darkness that surrounded her was putting her on edge. "Follow my voice, Kai. Take my hand."

Immediately, Kailani reached up to where she knew the tiny hole would be. She was surprised to find McCree's fingers already sticking through the hole. His hand was much larger than hers, so he couldn't fit it all the way through, though she was still thankful as she felt the warmth of his skin on the tips of her fingers. She slowly scooted closer to his hand, resting her cheek against it as her eyes fluttered. The pain subsided just a bit as she did so.

Then, McCree's hand disappeared through the hole again, and her cheek was left cold in the absence of his touch. She heard him swear under his breath before he spoke up. "Kai, you're bleedin'..."

"It's coming out of my eyes," Kailani said to him. She reached up and wiped some more blood from her eyes, flinching as the touch caused pain to shoot through her skull. A ringing noise echoed through her head, and she groaned loudly. "T-They did something to me. Jesse, it hurt so bad..."

Silence followed her words. She called his name again, though to no avail. Kailani reached through the hole in the wall, desperate to feel him, though she was met with nothing but cool air. The sound of a door slamming shut met her ears, causing the ringing to begin once again, and she slumped against the wall in defeat. They had taken McCree now, and she knew that there was nothing that she could do to help him.

Solitude was the last thing that she wanted. It allowed for her thoughts to run rampant, and she was unable to stop them. Her stomach twisted with hunger, her eyes drooping as exhaustion threatened to consume her. For a moment, specks of white light floated through her vision, and in her disoriented state, she mistook them for stars. She smiled sleepily, recalling the times when she was a young child when she would sit on the balcony of their tiny house overlooking the Pacific Ocean and study the stars with her mother and her brother. Her mother would take them out there almost every night, teaching them the stories behind the constellations whilst strumming on her ukelele. The thought comforted her slightly, and her mothers voice echoed through her mind as she began to sing in her dazed state.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine."

She smiled as she remembered her mother's touch. The warmth of her embrace and the softness of her lips. It had been so long since she felt a parent's love, and she suddenly wondered if they even remembered her. It was so soon after her brother passed. She left them alone, without the last of their children to care for. She wondered if they could ever recover from that.
