THE SOUND OF HER heartbeat pounding in her ears was what finally pulled her back into consciousness. She shifted a bit, the stiffness of her joints causing her to groan softly. A dull throbbing pain shot through her body as she slowly came to. She could feel the softness of a mattress beneath her, and that was the only thing that somewhat eased the discomfort that overcame her.
She heard the sound of movement somewhere to the left of her. A moment later, a soft string of Japanese met her ears, and she almost immediately recognized the accented voice of Genji. She attempted to pull herself into a sitting position, but a soft hand on her chest held her down on the bed.
Her eyes fluttered open for the first time in what seemed like days. The room she was in was fairly dark, the only light coming from a lamp on a table near her bed. Her vision was blurry for a moment as it adjusted, then she began to make out a familiar figure standing over her. His helmet had been discarded somewhere, allowing her to get a full view of his face. There was a look of evident worry that spread over his features.
"Genji," she hummed his name. Her voice was scratchy, her throat dry as if it hadn't been used in ages. Her head swarmed with memories, though all of it was too confusing for her to register. She remembered the ground shaking, the headquarters building of the Overwatch base erupting into flames, and then the hard earth as she was knocked backwards into darkness. "What happened?"
Genji looked away. He seemed almost afraid to answer. Kailani frowned, taking a moment to gaze around at her surroundings. She realized that she was not in her dorm; in fact, she didn't recognize the room she was currently in at all. "Where are we?"
"Zurich," Genji answered simply. There was a faraway look in his crimson eyes as they darted everywhere but her. He was nervous, she could tell by the way he shifted his weight back and forth between his feet.
Kailani began to panic. The memories that swarmed her mind were far too fuzzy; she knew something happened, but she had no idea what, and how odd Genji was acting made her believe that it wasn't anything good. "Where is everyone?" She asked him. Suddenly, she longed to see Dr. Ziegler, Lena... anyone familiar. "Genji... did something happen?"
Genji turned his guilty gaze towards her. He knew that he had to tell her; she had a right to know. Yet, he was terrified. What if he made the wrong decision? What if she was angry at him for taking her away? All he wanted was for her to be safe, but would she understand that?
He swallowed nervously. "Overwatch is done. The base was destroyed. Morrison and Reyes are dead, possibly more. You..." He looked down with a frown. His chest tightened as he thought back to her limp body, the blood that covered his armor. Her blood. "You almost died, Lani. The explosion..."
He trailed off, unable to finish, though he didn't need to. Slowly, the memories were beginning to unfold. Suddenly, all at once, Kailani remembered. She remembered how angry Morrison was when she returned from Numbani. She remembered the unfamiliar agents she saw wandering the compound, the message that said "Phoenix incoming," and then pain. So much pain.
Shakily, she looked down at her body for the first time since she awakened. Numerous cuts and bruises littered her skin. A large, red burn sat in the middle of her forearm. Her shirt was torn right across the chest, and she was surprised to find that the skin exposed by the tear was virtually untouched. She would have thought that there would be a wound, but she was seemingly uninjured.
"We had to leave, Lani," Genji said to her. He seemed almost nervous. She wondered if he was worried that she was upset with him. She looked up at him, surprised to find him watching her with wide eyes. He was obviously shaken up by the incident, and her eyes scanned the exposed skin of his body in search of any injuries. "We could not stay there any longer. I had to keep you safe. But... I do not know what to do. Overwatch is all I have known since..." He closed his eyes for a moment, shoulders heaving as he sucked in a deep breath of air. "I do not know where to go."
