"Dinners ready!" My mom called out. It took about 5 seconds before Nick snapped out of his daze and got off of me, offering me a hand once he stood up. I took his hand and he tugged me off the ground, but I immediately gripped onto his shoulders for dear life when I started getting dizzy.
"Woah woah woah Jules, be careful there.' He grabbed my waist to help me stand, making sure I wouldn't fall over. I fluttered my eyes shut and took a deep breath before opening my eyes and pulling myself away from his warm hold.
"I'm fine, let's just go yeah?" I said as less of a question and more of a demand as I was walking out my door. I was immediately hit with the scent of chicken, so strong I was sure the neighbours could smell it too.
"Smells good, Jo!" Nick called out to my mother once we reached the bottom of the stairs.
"Why thank you dear, come sit down you two." She said whilst motioning her arms towards where she was seated at the dining table. The table was set neatly with placemats and shiny cutlery, a piece of chicken and bowls of different vegetables and potatoes were scattered in the middle.
"Put as much as you guys would like." My mother said as we took a seat at the table. Nick and my mom went straight for the chicken whilst I jumped at the vegetables. I made sure to put exactly two tablespoons, and to get three potatoes. People pay more attention to what's left of your meal than what you had to begin with, so I make sure to put enough where it looks like there's something there but at the same time I don't have to eat most of it to make it look like it's been eaten.
Once I finished carefully placing my vegetables and potatoes in their place, I went to go and get a bit of chicken. I could see the juice and oils just by looking at it and it made me want to puke and binge at the same time. I made sure to grab a minimal amount, that way if I lose control mid-meal there won't be that much there to eat anyway. I look down, happy with what I have and the way it looks like there's a lot there. I then acknowledge the familiar feeling of eyes burning into me, so I pick up my fork and shovel some vegetables in my mouth. I chew, and chew and chew and chew, and then I swallow. I sip on my water.
'Sip on that water until it's half finished, then wait a bit before eating anything else' The voice tells me, and so I do. I discreetly chug half of my water before returning to the all too familiar habit of playing with my food. I take my fork and knife and begin to cut up the chicken, very carefully. Then once the chicken is cut up, I go and cut every piece in half. Then I cut every piece in half yet again, before moving the small pieces around my plate.
'Don't even think about eating any more than you need to.' The voice reminds me. I pick up some more veggies on my fork and the smallest piece of chicken I could see and shovelled that into my mouth. I swirled my food around my plate done more and arranged it in a way that made it look like most of it was eaten before dropping my fork and knife onto my plate. My mom and Nick finished eating around 2 minutes ago, so I declared I was finished and headed into the kitchen with Nick. I was expecting him to yell at me, to give me a lecture about how it wasn't good enough that I was barely eating, but I was only offered a blanket of suffocating silence. I handed him the plate I had just washed, he took it and dried it without even looking up at me. What the fuck was happening. I was about to ask him what was happening when his phone started ringing, and I saw him slightly tense as he took his phone out of his back pocket.
"I'll be back in a minute." He muttered to me quickly and coldly before walking out of the kitchen~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
