The ferry was what men took you to when they wanted to do something with you that they could be interested in
On the mainland, we went to a gas station
He said to pick out any candy I wanted
I must’ve gone with hard caramel
The kind you sucked on until you grew impatient and bit into it
Or butterscotch
The store had bait minnows in it
I remember years before when I set all the minnows free
I didn’t think to do it this time
I saw you get a twelve-to-sixteen pack of Bud Light even though I knew you weren’t supposed to
I wanted to say something
What would I have said?
You gave me candy
I stuck to the deal
Later that year you turned yellow and died like a leaf in the fall
