Chapter 3 ~ Frenemies

Suddenly, I heard and felt thundering footsteps as a bunch of soldiers in white and red rose over the horizon. I blinked at the bunch of men with a sigh, rubbing my eyes even harder.

I think I'm starting to hallucinate, is that an entire army of soldiers!?

"Great. Way to go, Emberlynn. You messed up, yet again. God, am I really this unlucky today?" Even though I was muttering to myself, I was faintly aware of a violet gaze on me. I shook it off though as I watched the army come closer and closer.

Once they were close enough, they parted ways to reveal a guy with blonde hair and blue eyes. He was dressed the most fancy, so he's probably someone important or something.

"King of Spades," the guy said, nodding to Ray with cold eyes.

Wait... King!? Let me guess, he's actually some super powerful supernatural entity god thingamajig that can kill someone with just a glance. Wait, no. Just a thought.

"King of Hearts," Ray said, nodding slightly at the blondie.

The King of Hearts raised his hand for a moment, eyes flashing red. Immediately, all the weapons that were held by the Black Army, a bunch of soldiers that had snuck up behind Fenrir, Seth, Luka, Sirius, and Ray, disappeared into thin air.

Wow. That guy is either extremely arrogant, or extremely stupid. My parents will yell at me if I even so much as read a book about magic. That's how paranoid they are about me risking my life. Afterall, to use magic is to basically use your life source.

That's why I found a way to absorb magic around me to keep myself safe. Magic from Magic Crystals, stuff like that. But sadly, London doesn't have any Magic Crystals for me to practice with. It's been twelve years since I've practiced magic.

Fenrir and Seth said something about fighting, and waiting five hundred years? What? Have their relationships been this bad for half a millennium? Geez, let me guess, this all started because someone stole your chickens or something stupid like that. Or maybe you guys don't even know why you're fighting, and are just fighting for the sake of it.

I regret coming to Cradle at this time.

"Lance, stop this," Sirius called out.

The king, Lance, glared at the tall man. "Don't speak as if we're old friends," he said with a glare. Lance's eyes flashed crimson for a moment, and on instinct, I threw a shield out, absorbing the magic into me.

I inhaled sharply as the familiar magical feeling rushed through me, making me giddy beyond excitement. It's been way too long since I've had this feeling inside of me. I can't believe I went for twelve years without this feeling of thrill.

Everyone blinked at me in shock as I carefully stepped out, feeling very out of place in my simple dress, hoodie, and sneakers. "Come on, guys," I said, looking at the two sides. "We don't need to fight! Why can't we just talk it out? Let's get to know each other a bit."

Sirius' eyes softened at my words, but Lance stared at me vacantly. His eyes really were cold, emotionless. I wonder how long it took for you to learn to do that. I wonder how much you've been through to have that look in your eyes.

"Alice the Second," he said, his voice booming through the plaza we were in. "I consider anyone who stands in my way an enemy. Do you want to become one?"

I blinked for a bit, searching the King of Heart's gaze. After a few moments, I simply shrugged my shoulders. "It's your choice who you consider an enemy. But considering that what you're proposing is something I would rather stop, I suppose we're frenemies."

Lance blinked for a moment. "Fren...emies?"

I nodded my head. "Yeah! Friends, that are enemies! Put the two together and you get frenemies."

Everyone was frozen for a moment before Lance spoke. "I don't consider you as a friend." His eyes were cold, yet again. That hint of warmth in them that had appeared before just disappeared, like the weapons he vanished.

I let out a dramatic sigh, placing a hand over my heart. "You wound me," I cried out loudly. "It seems that my friendship for you isn't reciprocated!"

Jonah, the guy who had grabbed me, glared at me with gritted teeth. "Are you making fun of the Red Army," he asked, his voice cold and threatening.

I gave the whitehead a small smile. "It's not supposed to be mean or offending, but you can take it however you like, I guess."

"Both of you, back off," Blanc said, speaking up from beside me. "No fighting in the Central Quarter, remember?"

Jonah glared at Blanc and the Black Army, as well as me, but Lance just nodded his head, leading the soldiers away.

"Well then, are you okay," Ray asked, coming up to me.

I nodded my head, starting to drift off slightly. I pinched myself on the back of my hand to keep myself awake. "Yeah, I'm fine," I chirped. I rubbed my eyes with a small yawn. "Just a bit tired. I haven't stayed up this late in a long time."

"You can sleep at the Black Army headquarters," Ray offered. "But in return, we'll need your magic repelling abilities once the war comes."

I paused for a moment, hands falling to my sides. "Does there have to be a war," I asked, looking at the ground.

I've been told that I was naive, or stupid for wishing that people can just stop fighting. Not only can't I stand blood and injuries, they give me the chills, but I don't want anyone to be hurt in general.

Sirius placed a gentle hand on my head, his large palm almost covered my whole skull. It was really warm, and surprisingly soothing. "We'll see what we can do to avoid the war," he said, a small smile on his lips. Understanding was in his violet gaze. I don't think he wants a war either.

"Well then," I sighed, ruffling my hair myself. "I guess I can try to help out. As long as no innocent lives are taken."

"I'm glad we see eye to eye." Ray smiled at me as he led us to a carriage. "Sirius, Luka, why don't you guard Emberlynn? The rest of us can ride outside."

I waved bye at the White Rabbit as I hopped into the carriage, taking a seat opposite to Luka and Sirius.
