Once I practically got those six words engraved in my mind, I headed outside to the dimly lit corridor, trying to remember where the kitchen was. I was starving, it's been a while since I ate. But in the darkness, the halls looked nothing like how they did when Seth showed them to me.
So when I found a room, the door opened just a crack, light spilling out from inside, I immediately went towards it like a moth to a flame. Whoever is inside, I'll scold them for staying up so late before asking where the kitchen is.
Yeah, that's a good plan. No one should still be awake this late. I should be in bed too, but I'm just way too hungry to sleep right now. And way too energized. It's only been a few hours at most, so why am I so energetic already? I know I'm normally chirpy anyways, but this level of energy is through the roof!
"Hello," I asked quietly, pushing the crack open a bit more to peek my head inside.
I don't know what I expected, but it sure wasn't Sirius, working late in the night, reading documents. Now I feel guilty for refusing to study sometimes just because I didn't like the materials.
Sirius looked up as soon as I talked, no, as soon as he heard the door creak open. "Oh." Once he saw me, he immediately jumped up. "You're awake. How are you feeling?"
"Just a little hungry," I smiled sheepishly. "Can you point me to where the kitchen is? This place is like a maze at night."
Sirius chuckled, shaking his head slowly as he came over. "Come, I'll make you something to eat."
"You really don't have to," I said, even as my stomach rumbled at the thought of some yummy food. I probably would've just grabbed an apple if Sirius wasn't up, and I don't want to bother him.
"No worries, I was about to take a break anyways."
I followed after Sirius silently, looking around, trying to memorize this route for later. "Why are you up so late anyways?"
"Just going over some documents. Official military business, you know."
I frowned slightly at Sirius' back. Even as he talked, I could sense a hint of tiredness in his voice. "You should sleep soon, it's not good to stay up so late."
Sirius raised an eyebrow at me as I walked alongside him. I think he's slowing down his pace to match mine, so I wouldn't have to run to catch up to him. What a sweetheart!
"You shouldn't be up this late either," he said in protest. "But I suppose you slept through a whole day, so it's acceptable, to a certain degree."
"Wait, what?" I blinked at Sirius, not registering his comment for a while. "I slept through a whole day!?"
Sirius chuckled, placing a finger over his lips. "Hush, Emberlynn. You're gonna wake everyone up with your shouts."
I placed a hand over my mouth. Whoops.
"But yeah, you didn't come out at all yesterday, so we all assumed that you were still sleeping. I guess that was true."
I nodded my head, a slight frown on my face. Was I really that tired? Sure, I don't usually pull all-nighters, but I shouldn't be that tired, right? Was it the magic absorption? It's like stretching, according to my brother. You need to constantly practice to get better, and long intervals without any practice might lead to me losing my touch.
I definitely lost my touch after twelve years.
"Yeah," I nodded quietly. "I guess I was pretty tired. This whole thing is just... magical, and wondrous, I guess."
Sirius nodded his head in understanding. "In your land, there isn't any magic, correct?"
I let out a long sigh. "Yeah, life's pretty ordinary in my world. No magic, no wars. Nothing like that. Kind of boring, to be honest." I muttered the last part to myself, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Sirius heard.
