"This is horrible." I moan, getting up off of the floor for what seems like the hundredth time. "Seriously. I feel like a two year old." I say. Tony looks amused, while Bruce rolls his eyes at him.
"Two year olds can walk better than you are attempting to right now." Tony says. I glare at him before using the table next to me to help me into a standing position. I was getting a little better, but walking was hard. Loki, Nat, and Steve were all at a meeting with Fury. Kim, Jane, and Darcy had all left yesterday, which marked a week since I had crashed my own funeral. Thor had to go back to Asguard for a few weeks, having been summoned for something by Odin. So right now, it was just Tony, Bruce, Clint, and I in the tower.
"Why is this so hard? I've been walking my whole life!" I exclaim, extremely frustrated. "Create fire? Sure." I say, snapping my fingers and creating a spark. "Controlling water? Got it." I say, making the water in Tony's glass jump. "But walking? Heaven forbid I do that." That gets Tony to full out laugh, and Bruce to crack a smile.
"Still having trouble?" Clint asks as he walks into the room. I glare at him. "Yep. Still having trouble." I lean against the table, while Clint walks over to Tony. "How is it going?" I can hear him ask.
"She's frustrated with herself." Bruce says back. I lean down pretending to fix my pant leg. "It's not helping her concentrate, and she won't be able to help herself if she doesn't take a break, which she refuses to do." I glare over at them.
"She can hear us." Tony whispers in a not so quiet voice. "Shhhh."
"It's not like she can come over here and do anything about it." Clint says, turning towards me and folding his arms over his chest. I glare at him, giving him my best, You're-going-to-regret-this look.
"Well, he's not wrong." Tony says, pointing at me with his pen. I say nothing, waiting for them to realize their mistake. I turn to Bruce for help.
"Guys, that's not really fair..." He starts.
"Bruce, its not your fault she isn't trying hard enough to walk." Clint says. Okay, that's to far.
"Excuse me?" I ask, trying to keep my voice calm. "I'm trying my hardest!"
"Obviously not." Tony says under his breath, turning back to a screen next to him.
"Tony!" That hurt.
"What? I call it as I see it flame princess." He says. "If you tried harder, you'd be up and able to help us. Right now, you're kinda deadweight."
"That's not true!" I yell. "It's not my fault I got poisoned!"
"How do we know that? You could have avoided the needle, or tried to help Legolas and Reindeer games get you out of there a little faster. This could've all been avoided." Tony says, shrugging. Clint and Bruce both look at him in shock, and I snap. I punch him across the face.
"You son of a biscuit!" I yell as he slowly gets up, blinking in shock.
"Son of a biscuit?" He asks, rubbing his jaw. "Calm down a little flame princess. That's the closest I think I've ever heard you come to cursing. Besides, it worked, didn't it?"
"What worked?!" I ask angrily.
"That went a little far Stark." Clint says. "You deserved to get hit."
"What worked?" I ask again, in a dangerously low tone. I may have been glowing slightly as well.
"You were concentrating too hard." Tony says. "I texted Legolas to come down here and help me distract you. I mean, c'mon Brucey," he says, turning to Bruce. "do you concentrate on your legs when you walk? No. It's purely instinct. You just, you know, do it."
"So Stark thought if we distracted you enough, egging you on, you'd stop thinking and just do it." Clint says to me. I slowly look down. Yep. I was standing. I look across the lab to where I had been. I had stormed over here just to hit Tony.
"Huh..." I trail off. "That worked. Oops." I say when I see that Tony's cheek and jaw were turning red. He was going to have a bruise there within the hour. "Sorry Tony."
"Don't be." He says, waving it off. "I deserved that. I did go past the line."
"You destroyed the line, Tony." Bruce comments. "But it did work. Why don't we go take a break?" I smile.
"A movie break?" I ask. "We haven't watched movies together in forever!" Both Tony and Clint roll their eyes, but Bruce agrees quickly.
"We can get it ready. Nat, Steve, and Loki should be back soon. We can surprise them." He says.
"To the movie room!" I exclaim. I start to run, but quickly fall. "Gosh darn it..." I mumble as Bruce helps me up.
"Let's not run quite yet." He says. "Stick to walking for now." I nod quickly.
"Yep." We slowly make our way to the elevator before going down to the in home theater.
"Nat just texted me." Clint says, looking down at his phone. "They're done with Fury. Should be home in about ten minutes. They've got something important to tell us too, apparently." I look up, confused.
"I thought they were just debriefing?" I ask.
"No. Fury doesn't want to do that until you can as well. Fury needed them for something else." Clint says, going over to the small snack bar. He tosses me some sour gummy worms.
"Loki included?" I ask, surprised. "Why didn't you go too?"
"He just wanted Nat and Steve. How am I supposed to know?" Clint asks, plopping down in a big armchair next to the couch I'm on. "Toss me one of those." I toss a gummy worm at him, and he catches it in his mouth. I laugh. "What?" He asks.
"You looked like a little baby.... Hawk." I say with a snort of laughter. He gives me a look.
"Har de har har." He says. "How original. Bird jokes." I laugh again.
"You were asking for it." I say. "You shouldn't have asked for a gummy worm."
"I realized the error of my ways." He says sarcastically.
"What? Clint's admitting that? Never thought I'd see the day." A voice says from behind me. I crane my neck around, and see Nat, Steve , and Loki in the doorway.
"Nat!" I exclaim. "Steve! Loki!" I get up and walk over to Loki. I hug him, and he returns it before freezing. He suddenly is holding me at arms length, and I see Nat and Steve stare at me out of the corner of my eye.
"You're walking!" He exclaims, grinning widely. I nod quickly, smiling hugely. I reach up and peck him on the lips quickly.
"Tony, Bruce, and Clint helped me!" I exclaim. "I mean, yea, I fell a lot, but look!" I bounce on my heels a little bit. "Now you don't have to carry me everywhere!"
"I knew there was a catch..." He mutters, and I roll my eyes and hit him lightly on the shoulder.
"What did Fury have to say to you guys?" Clint asks. "Tell us before the lovely couple makes us all puke." I roll my eyes and pull Loki over to the couch I had been sitting on.
"Well, I can honestly say you won't believe it. Steve says, sitting down.
"Did he say I still need to come in to debrief?" I ask. "Wondering how long it's going to take?"
"Well, yes." Steve says after a pause. "But that's not the suprising part." He looks around the room. "We should wait for Stark. Where is he, anyway?"
"He, uh... Went to go get something." I say quickly. He should be back any secon-"
"Okay, I got the ice. We can start the movie." Tony says as he walks in, holding a nice pack to his cheek. "Sophie, you should be glad Pepper is in Malibu right now." He says, pointing towards me.
"She'd probably side with me, you know that, right?" I say. "You should be the one who's glad she's in Malibu." He flops down in an open armchair, thinking about it.
"Yea... Probably." He admits. "Oh. Hey, The others are back." He notices. "How was Fury? Still a great little ray of sunshine?"
"What happened to you, Stark?" Steve asks.
"Hehe.... That's a long story." I brush off nervously. "What did Fury say? You never did tell us." I ask, changing the subject.
"Why are you changing the subject?" Nat asks.
"Cause she punched me." Tony says. "I deserved it. Crossed a line, so it's fine." He shrugs.
"Why did you feel the need to punch Stark?" Loki asks, turning to me. "I don't blame you, I'm just curious."
"Hey!"
"He used an.... Unorthodox method to get me to walk." I say. "Let's just say, words were exchanged to get me angry, it worked, he payed the price, all is forgiven."
"What did you say Tony?" Nat asks.
"Eh. Doesn't matter anymore." I say quickly, covering for him. What he had said would not go over well with the others. "So Fury? Unbelievable news? I'm curious." I say.
"Well, first things first. He wants us all to debrief about the fuller incident by next week." She says after giving me an odd look. "And then it got complicated." I raise my eyebrow, and the room stays silent as we wait for her to continue. "Fury called Loki into his office. Alone." She turns to Loki. "You two talked for forever. Long enough for Me to try and show Steve how a phone works. Again."
"Can we hurry this up? We were wanting to watch a movie." Tony says. "And we all know Cap can't use a phone to save his life. Next." Steve glares at Tony.
"Fury and I came to an agreement." Loki says. "To help make up for the... New York incident." Clint snorts. "In light of recent events, saving Sophie and living here, we decided that it would be a fitting idea to have me help out."
"In short." Nat says. "He's saying that the Avengers are no longer a team of seven, but of eight." Cue stunned silence. "Meet our new team member." More silence.
"You're an Avenger?" I ask, turning to Loki, shocked.
"No need to be surprised." He scoffs. "Fury thought it would help finish... 'turning me around' as he put it. I'm pretty sure he just wants to keep a closer eye on me." I laugh.
"That does sound like something Fury would do." Tony says. "Take the biggest criminal on earth, and get him to join a group of superheros just so he can keep a closer watch." Tony scoffs. "Alright. I'm tired of waiting. I'm starting then movie. All of you shut up." And without hesitation, he presses the play button on the remote.
