A trembling sigh escaped your lips as James led you away from the people, holding your waist. He lowered his head to your ear as he whispered.

‘’Don’t cry now.’’ Was the only thing he said. You bit your lip and nodded, not wanting that guy to see your tears.

Far away from the crowd, you could only hear the noise of people talking, but you couldn’t hear what they were saying. The guy who just insulted you was nowhere to be seen. The hands on your waist turned you around, now you were facing James.

He was your best friend since kindergarten. He was tall, tan, muscular, kind. He would make the perfect boyfriend.

You felt the tears land on your cheeks, and you tried to be brave, wanting to wipe them away the moment the fell. James beat you to it.

‘’I’m so sorry (y/n). That guy is an asshole for hurting you like that.’’ He said, casually wiping away some tears that somehow escaped your eyes. You shrugged as if nothing happened.

‘’I’m used to it. I never get what I want anyway. I’m just not good enough for the things I want.’’ You said, pretending like you didn’t care at all.

James frowned.

‘’If I was your boyfriend, I would never let you go.’’ He said, trying to cheer you up. You shook your head and turned away from him, taking a deep breath.

‘’Don’t say that. Because one, you are not my boyfriend, and two, everyone seems to give up on me in the end..’’ You trailed off, staring off in the distance.

There was a small silence. You felt a soft tickling on your arm, his fingers trailing down to your hand, like a feather. He took a hold of it. You looked down, and back up in his hazel eyes. Then James spoke up.

‘’But I’d like to be everything that you want..’’ He said. You pulled your hand away.

‘’Don’t say that because you pity me.’’ You said, crossing your arms.

‘’I don’t pity you. I love you.’’ He spoke softly, the wind carrying his words. You shook your head.

‘’(y/n).. Take a chance.. or you’ll never know.’’ He said a little stern, but still friendly. You looked back at him, seeing the truth he spoke in his eyes.

‘’You mean it?’’ You asked. He nodded.

‘’For a very long time now actually. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to risk our friendship, but I think it’s worth a shot.’’ He smiled. You smiled a little, the tears magically stopped streaming.

‘’So what do you think?’’ He asked, the wind picking up his hair, playing with it.

‘’Well, I’m thinking how you haven’t properly asked me on a date yet.’’ You smiled.

‘’Right.. (y/n) I really like you, would you like to go on a date with me?’’ He grinned. You laughed a little, looking at the ground and back up in his eyes.

‘’I’d love to, James.’’
