It will be fine ." Not even those soothing words could calm your queasy stomach as you clenched your boyfriend's hand tighter, staring in the dark abyss of the menacing home. The soft streams of moonlight that landed on its rickety roof brought a chill down your spine as you witnessed some enter through the large door and never return.
"They're not coming back."
"The exit is at the other end. The creator probably just wanted to add a scary thrill to the house." For once in your life, you couldn't believe his words as you determined whether you should head back to his car, lock the doors, and refuse no other proposition but going home. But you knew how important this was to him. Not having as much time as in the past because of his growing name, you didn't want to ruin maybe the only night he could attend the attraction he had been going to since he was a kid.
Letting out a shaky breath in hopes to calm yourself down, you looked up at James' reassuring smile before looking back towards the house that got so much attention around this time of year.
"Alright." Releasing a small nod, your feet carried you a step closer before you stopped once more. You didn't think you even had the strength to go even a inch closer. But as your fears consumed you once more, a light squeeze on your hand was brought to your attention and you abruptly turned to James.
"It will be fine. I'll be there every step of the way." In that moment, you felt protected. Sure, the fear that bubbled within you didn't magically disappear as it did in the movies, but you had gained confidence. A first in the night.
Letting another nod escape, you intertwined both of your hands as you gripped his tightly. If you were going to do this, you were going to do this your way.
And your way was never letting him go.

"What was that?!" Your body pressed against his own as your ears picked up the creaking of a door. Now descending the old staircase, the thought of someone other than the two of you entering a room brought a chill down your spine
Especially since you were the only two in the house.
"It was just the wind babe." The reassuring statement brought your embrace to lighten although the words were filled with uncertainty of their own. Even if he had been in this house every year, the suspense of the older mansion had gotten to him as well.
Not that he would show it. Although you found the action cute, you decided to keep the realization to yourself. You would let him be your knight in shining armor. He always was anyway.

The past thirty minutes had been a living nightmare. Never in your wildest imagination had you thought your heart could leap from your chest that many times. But you had proved yourself wrong as your hand quickly pushed the exit door open, your breath caught in your throat as you focused on calming down your raging heart.
There it was. The laugh that you had expected. It had appeared every time you had shown your vulnerable side and whipping your head to the laughing man, a small glare was thrown in his direction.
"It's not funny. You know I hate those things." Turning back to avoid his gaze, a hot blush spread across your cheeks. Why did you have to agree to do that? You knew it would make him happy but it always ended with you being the center of attention.
You didn't want to turn around. Not yet at least. You had wanted to push down the blush that had arisen and calm your nerves but your desires were not acknowledged as you were spun around, the arms that wrapped around your waist pulling you closer to James.
"Thank you. You didn't just me happy because of some tradition. But because I could protect you." A small smile spread across your lips as you rested against his chest, the warmth radiating from his body spreading to your own despite the cold wind that had picked up.
"Anytime. Now can we please go to car? I can't stand being near to this place." With the plead, you had attempted to break free of his embrace only for his arms to tighten.
"Oh. I never gave you your reward." Confusion consumed you as you lifted your head, blue eyes staring into his own hazel ones.
"I never asked for one." You didn't have time to question further as his lips descended on your own, lingering on your cold lips as you savored the action. The butterfly feeling that always seemed to appear when he did the simple motion brought a flush to arise on your cheeks once more as you wrapped your arms around his neck in response.
It had lasted all too shortly. As it always did and as you broke the tight embrace, your once soft smile shifted to a grin as you simply stood where you were and looked into the eyes that always drew you in.
It didn't take money to win your heart. It only took that matching grin that crossed his own lips as he brought you closer.
"Come on. Let's go home."
