For as long as you could remember you’d always been in love with James. You’d known him since you were just 3 years old as your mothers had met at a toddler group. Although, you’d never had the courage to tell him due to the fear of losing your best friend.
The last few years had been tough. Whilst the two of you had worked your way through the final bits of school, your feelings towards him had grown stronger. Even harder was having to watch James flirt with other girls and act happy for him when he found himself in a relationship.
However, as you danced away to the music with your best friends, you were determined not to let anything ruin the fun of prom night. Not even James and his date for the evening.
You found yourself gazing in his direction. He was wearing a black suit with dark blue shirt. His hair was perfectly styled, looking soft and fluffy as his fringe was scraped across his forehead. His dark eyes sparkled as the disco lights bounced off of them. His date wearing her short navy dress riding up as she tried grinding her hips against James.
He must have noticed you watching him as he flashed you a pearly white smile and started making his way towards you. In a panic, you made your excuses to your group of friends and left the dance floor casually trying not to raise suspicion.
You poured yourself a glass of punch and gulped it down, swallowing hard. A large pair of hands found their way to your hips, making you jump at the sudden touch. The smell of a familiar cologne filled the air as the body behind gently pressed against yours.
"Are you trying to avoid me?" James shouted over the music as you turned to face him.
"of course not!" you shouted back, forcing a smile onto your face.
It was hard to think that in a couple of months time, the two of you would be going your separate ways after the summer. James was moving to LA to peruse his dreams of being an actor and you were headed to New York in hope of becoming a journalist. Knowing the two of you would barely see each other made the idea of telling James how you felt all the more pointless.
"dance with me" James demanded, pulling gently on your hand trying to ease you onto the dance floor.
You reluctantly gave in as he flashed you his puppy dog eyes that he knew you couldn’t resist.
As you danced together all of your troubles seemed to disappear. You completely forgot about the fear of losing him if James found out how you truly felt; he was just your best friend.
Sooner than you’d have hoped, a slow song began to play. ‘She Will Be Loved’ by Maroon 5 filled the room and couples began dancing closely together. Your heart sank as you saw James’ date make her way towards him for them to dance together. You silently slipped away, trying to stop the pain inside your heart from showing on your face.
Before you managed to get away from the dance floor, you felt someone touch your arm gently. You looked over your shoulder, expecting one of your other friends to be there ready to comfort you. However, James was standing there without his date. He gestured back to the dance floor, flashing you the puppy dog look in his eyes.
"Where’s your date?" you asked him confused, shouting above the music again.
"I told her we’d get the next one…" James replied with a shrug of his shoulders before pulling you back towards the dance floor.
Taking your place amongst the various couples, James pulled you close to him. His cologne filled the air around you, making you feel weak at the knees. He gently placed his hands on the small of your back, holding your body close to his. He swayed gently to the music, causing you to mirror his movements as you let your arms rest on his shoulders and lent your head against his chest. James moved one of his hands from your back and gently ran his ringers through your hair. He then took one of your hands from around his shoulders and began to play with your fingers, causing you to close your eyes in relaxation.
Tears began to escape from your eyes as you wished for the moment to last. Your eyes shot open as you felt James place his index finger beneath your chin, lifting your face towards him. He shot you a worried look, his dark eyes deep with concern.
"It’s just hit me that you’re leaving soon, that’s all" you shrugged with a small laugh, trying to make light of the situation.
"You shouldn’t cry, whatever the case. You’re beautiful and an amazing person, you don’t deserve to cry" James spoke softly, gently wiping your tears away with his thumb as he still clutched your hand. You let out a small smile at his words. Maybe this would be the time to tell him how you truly felt about him.
Whilst you were deep in thought, you suddenly felt a pair of lips brushing against yours. You stepped back in shock, unsure of what was going on.
"oh my god. I’m so sorry, I don’t know what came over me!" James rushed through his words, a state of panic in his voice. He stopped for a minute as you looked at him. A clear state of fear was plastered all over his face, he’d never looked so scared.
Without thinking, you placed your hand on the back of his neck and pulled him towards you, allowing your lips to crash together. You kissed him passionately, finally able to release the frustration of not being able to do so for so long. To your surprise, James pulled you closer and returned the kiss passionately, deepening it.
As you pulled away, you blushed. James pulled you close to him again and kissed you softly, barely allowing your lips to touch. He rest his forehead against yours, looking deep into your eyes and gently stroking your cheek with his thumb.
"I should have told you before now… I love you" he breathed nervously
"I love you too James" you managed to reply, choking back your tears of happiness before passionately kissing him again.
