Today was a special day. It was the last two days of middle school and Clare and all of her friends were planning a big surprise party for all of the teachers at the middle school. They wanted it to be perfect. Clare had everything set up in the big gymnasium. She had the decorations and she even hired a DJ and a caterer.
Clare helped her friends prepare for the big party. The decorating only took 3 days and now remaining two days were just food prep and flower making. Clare and her friends didn't want to buy flowers. Making them was just cheaper. The time seemed to go by so quickly. Clare hoped that she could get everything done for the party. The day went on smoothly. There was no homework. For the next day Clare and her friends would be preparing for the big surprise party.
Later that afternoon, it was time for everyone to clean out their desks. The time spent cleaning the desks wasn't very much time. It only took 30 to 45 minutes. Finally, it was time to go home. Clare was excited. She couldn't wait for the big surprise party that was going to happen on Friday. When Clare got home, her parents greeted her.
"It was a long day at work." Clare's mom said, how was your day? Your last day of middle school is on Friday. You are growing up so fast."
"My day was great." Clare said, the 8th grade students are planning a big surprise party for all of the teachers. They want to thank them for all that they have done for them over the past 4 years."
The news was shocking. Clare;s parents got very upset. They had never thought that Clare would ever do something like this without telling them. They were very upset.
"We are very disappointed in you." Clare's father said, we never thought that you would do something like this without telling us. If you had told us, we would have been able to help. For not telling us about the surprise party, you are grounded for a week. That means no talking to anyone at school. If we find out that you have been talking to anyone, you will be grounded the rest of the summer. Do you understand?"
"This isn't fair!" Clare said, I don't need to tell you everything. Some things are personal and besides you won't be at the party so there's no sense in you helping. You and mom will be at work. Also you can't just ground me for not telling you about this party. I am going to talk to people at school. There is just no way I am going to be silent. My best friend Elizabeth and I talk every day. If we don't talk, it will throw off our routine and she be so mad at me."
"Fine!" Clare's father said, you can talk to Elizabeth and me and your mother but you will not be talking to anyone else. If anyone tries to talk to you, just walk away."
Clare was relieved. She didn't like being grounded but at least she could still talk to her best friend. Now she could go to her room and read. She wasn't allowed to use her phone or her laptop. She was only allowed to read and draw. Now that she was free from her parents yelling she could go to her room and rest. She didn't sleep much. She was up crying for part of the night. She hated how mean her parents were and she couldn't take it anymore. A week before graduation, she would go after her dream of becoming a famous clarinet player.
