The questers set off bright and early the next morning. Charles was again at the reins, and was joined in the front by Admin. The two were laughing and joking, obviously pleased by the bright sun and good sleep.
Kaza sat in the corner, chatting with Nicklaus about magic, and mixing ingredients that would later be cooked into biscuits.
Lily Belle, Mila Rose and Snow sat opposite them, having a I-had-a-worse-injury-than-you contest. Occasionally, one of them would glance at Kaza and Nicklaus and laugh, but mostly, they kept to themselves.
“One time, I had a bruise as long as my arm!” Snow said, laughing.
“I broke three ribs falling off a roof!” Lily offered, giggling uncontrollably.
“Oh, you guys hush up!” Kaza said suddenly, handing her bowl to Nicklaus, “Check this bad boy out!” She lifted up her shirt to reveal a long, pale scar, wrapping around her side, and coming to a stop in the middle of her back. She laughed when Rose’s eyes got wide. “Beat that!” “Oh, but I can,” Rose exclaimed. She pulled off her shoe and rolled up her pant leg. The biggest, thickest scar any of them had ever seen wound around the young healers leg. “Okay, okay, you win!” The girls laughed.
Kaza went back to stirring her biscuits, and the other girls brought out a map and studied.
Rose was distracted. She was holding the ankle that held the scar, but none of them had really noticed.
As the night grew closer, the rest of the group started to notice that Rose wasn’t moving around very much. And every time she attempted to she was met by a severe pain.
The others took notice of this fairly quickly, but Admin was the first of them to ask about it. as soon as the others had left the caravan, he said;
“Rose...are you okay? You look like a horse trampled you, is this from what happened yesterday?”
“I’ll be fine Admin, don’t worry…” She tried to get up, but instead gave a loud wince and plopped back down.
“You don’t seem fine, now what happened?” He stretched out his hand to help her up. Rose stared at his offering hand for a moment, almost trying to decide on whether to accept or not. She finally gave up and accepted the help gratefully. She tried her hardest to get up gracefully but still stumbled a bit.
“Thank you” She sighed, giving him a crooked smile
“Now can you please tell me what’s wrong?” He asked, looking straight at her.
She looked around, the others were outside starting a fire. She sighed once more before answering him.
“Very well...but if I show you, you must promise not to tell the others! Promise?”
“Promise” He said as he put his hand over his heart.
She removed her jacket, revealing a white shirt that cut off from the shoulders. Moving her hair over her right shoulder she turned around, her back facing him. A fresh bruise could be seen, still a deep shade of blue.
“Holy hell Rose! How did that happen!?” Admin exclaimed.
“It was back at Eisen… One of those brutes stepped on me, and kept me pinned to the ground.” She sighed.
“You have to have someone look at it! That might be able to get infected. There is an opening, a big one, in the middle of the bruise!” He stated.
“I told you I’ll be alright! Why don’t you just leave it alone! PLEASE!” She almost begged.
“OK! Ok I won’t worry. Let’s just go outside and join the rest.”
“Thank you…”
