Life has to be the craziest thing ever known to man. Its twists and turns can be exhilarating and exhausting. One day you are functioning well unaware of a special someone’s existence and the next day you can’t seem to do anything without them. That is a puzzle humanity would die trying to solve.

Jide’s calls grew persistent with every passing day, there were days I was tempted to pick up to hear his voice, to hear him call my name in that way only he knows how but I didn’t because I wanted him to be happy and he would achieve that without me but today all of me was aching to see him. So, I decided to come up with an excuse to see him, a resignation letter. I had planned to resign the day I cut him off. It was the perfect excuse.

I drove to the office and met Ogechi at the lobby.

“Oh my God, Ireti how are you?” she rushed to me.

“I am fine” I flashed her a smile.

“You haven’t been coming to work. We were at your house the other day but your mother said you were sleeping and she didn’t want to disturb you” I had been struggling with sleep. The insomnia was bigger than the sleeping pills. Each time I was able to get a little sleep, my mother made sure the house was as quiet as a graveyard.

“She told me. thank you” I appreciated and I truly was grateful to have people who worried about me. Having people who worry about you is such an underrated blessing.

“So, what are you doing here? Are you resuming?” she asked.

“No” I shook my head.

She looked down at the envelope in my hands. “Ireti”

“Is Jide, sorry I mean the boss. Is the boss in?”

“Yes” she replied.

“Thanks, I will see you later” I left her presence hurriedly to avoid further questions.

I walked past my office avoiding Ifeoma. She would never let me resign or end this thing I had with Jide.
My feet came to a halt when they got to his office. I took a deep breath and knocked.

“Come in” he barked. I smiled because I heard his voice. I missed his voice.

“Ireti” he jerked up when he saw me.
The skin below his eyes were dragging his eyes down. They looked sad and it seemed like he also hadn’t been sleeping. I wanted to throw my resolve out the window and embrace him and have his cologne fill up my nose.

“Good morning sir” I greeted.
He frowned at the mention of sir. Sir puts a distance between us, a distance I so desperately didn’t want to place but had to.

“How are you?” he stared into my eyes, searching for answers.

“Fine” I moved to his desk and dropped the envelope before him.

“What is this?” he inquired.

“My resignation letter” I answered.

He glanced at it intensely as lines formed on his forehead. He was confused.

“Why are you resigning?”

“I am sure you know why” I whispered.

“No, I don’t Ireti, so kindly tell me”

“Jide please accept it” I turned to leave. If I looked at him for one more minute, my body would fling my resolve to the side and I would kiss him. He ran to the door to stop me from leaving.
