Day 12: Accidentally misgendering oneself (Ranpo x Dazai)

Hurt/comfort

Ranpo was sitting on the couch, watching a movie when it happened. Dazai was on the phone, with a friend, when it happened. He was just talking, and then it slipped out. He didn't mean for it to happen, and it was just himself, not someone else doing it, so why did it upset him so much? He was so upset and shocked that he hung up on his friend, and went to the one person who could comfort him- Ranpo.

"Hm? What's the matter, Osamu?" Dazai had flopped onto the elder man's lap, surprising him. "Are you alright?"

"It happened again.." Dazai sniffled.

"Oh.. I'm sorry, honey.. It's okay." Ranpo rubbed his back soothingly.

"Why does it keep happening?! Why does my brain think that??"

"Easy.. Give yourself some time, you just came out to yourself not too long ago, so it'll take a little while for your brain to process that you don't use that name and pronouns." Ranpo shushed the man.

"But why does it feel like this? Why do I still think that that's my name??" Dazai cried.

"Because you've had that name since birth. It's gonna take a little work to forget it, but I'll help you." Ranpo explained.

Dazai sulked. "I hate this..."

Ranpo's eyes softened. He hugged the man. "I know, it's alright though. I'm here to help you." The pair snuggled into each other's warmth.

"Okay.. I just wish my mind was used to this already.."

"I know.. It's okay." Ranpo planted a kiss to Dazai's forehead. "Who were you talking to? I heard you on the phone."

Dazai's mood seemed to lift. "Oh! I was talking to Atsushi! He's going on his first date tonight and he wanted me to help him!"

"Mm.. Is he dating that Akutagawa guy?"

"How'd you know?" Dazai questioned.

"I know everything, you know this." Ranpo joked.

"Yeah.. Uh.." Dazai smiled at the ground. "Thank you.. For.. You know, earlier. I'm sorry I'm such a mess, I know it's not that--" before he could continue, his cheeks were smooshed between warm hands. Piercing green eyes stared into his brown.

"Osamu, don't apologize." He kissed the man's forehead once again.

"Okay.. Thank you, Ranpo. I love you."

"I love you too, Osamu."
