THE SWORD AND THE SPIRIT

c h a p t e r n i n e t e e nEventually 9:00 AM arrives, much to Carson's dread.
"You have a visitor, Rivera. Up and at 'em," the orderly comes in, unlocking her restraints.
"Who is it?" she rubs at her ankles.
"I'm not a messenger, Carson. I'm just here to get you from point A to point B and make sure you don't kill yourself," she rolls her eyes, guiding her to the visitor's wing. "Enjoy."
Carson sits down to see her mom and grandmother come into the room enraged.
"What were you thinking?" Gina whisper-shouts, aware of the eyes on her.
"Gee mom, nice to see you too," she runs her hand through her tangled hair.
"You look awful," Ruby speaks up, grimacing at the state of her granddaughter.
"Thank you, I'm aware of that," she rolls her eyes.
"Why would you extend your stay? What the hell happened in there?"
"I have to. I can leave whenever I want-"
"Not exactly," Myers walks in. "You see, as your psychiatrist and the primary assessor of your mental health, I have the final say of whether or not you're allowed out. So sit tight," she winks, strutting out if the room.
"I'll be alright. It's just a few days," she bites her lips.
"Why did you agree in the first place? Carson, talk to us."
"Because if I didn't..." she leans forward, eyes full of fear. "They'd kill Lydia. And then me."
"Excuse me, ladies, you have one minute."
"Okay," they all fix him with glares.
"Has dad... Does he know?" she looks down at her hands.
"I told him," Gina nods, uncomfortable at the mention of her ex husband. Their phone call a few days ago was... anything but pleasant.
"Hello, Gina. Thought you blocked me after stealing my watch?" Drew answers the phone, obviously bothered to speak to her.
"I bought the watch, I keep the watch. And this is serious, so shut up and listen. It's about Carson," she sighs.
"What's wrong with her? Oh let me guess, she crashed the car, or trashed the house, or... Oh! Dropped out and became a stripper?"
"Do you have to insult her all the time?"
"It's not an insult, it's a fact. She drives like a blind woman, throws parties regularly, and, come on, she dresses like she stands on a corner."
