Standing in the middle of her closet, Mary thought about the day ahead. Anticipation filled the whole space like King Kong in an elevator. She needs to look cute. Biting her lip, she chose a pair of Jordache skinnies and a lavender, V-neck tee (which she would tie to the side). Then she took a pair of neon yellow heels and put them in her tote. It's just easier to drive in flip flops.
While she was changing into her outfit, her thoughts drifted back to what Samantha had told her the other day. To be honest she had been a little nervous about driving the girl home, after all she is Bobby's sister. This fact alone made her really want to make a good impression.
The girls were laughing and singing along to songs on the radio. The time spent together had been oddly pleasant. Samantha reminded her of a younger version of Ashley (a little sassy, very talkative, and always up for an adventure). When she was stopped at a traffic light, she asked Sam if she wanted to stop for colas. Of course her young passenger said yes. So Mary decided to go through Wendy's drive-thru. A small frosty actually sounded better than a soda.
It was there, Samantha had turned to her and started talking about her brother."You know Bobby used to take me here, like last year, before he dated that nasty she-devil. Then it was like I was suddenly the stupid little sister and he was too cool to hang out with. Did you know she was really mean to him?" No. Mary did not know that. She shook her head in the negative.
"Yeah, she treated Bobby like crap. He would give you the shirt off his back, if he knew you needed it. You know? He always takes care of others, always without thinking of himself. Well anyway, with her, anything he did was never good enough. How do I know this? Because one night his stupid snake friends were over, and they were in the basement talking. I snuck down the stairs, to see if I could hear any good gossip worth sharing. I kind of heard good stuff. They were talking about girls." Samantha rolled her eyes.
Mary just listened to her chatter away. She became very interested in what Sam had to say about how the she-devil, Christie, treated Bobby.
Picking at strands of her hair, Sam began recounting the story. "They asked how things were going with the evil one. My brother said he wasn't really sure because any time he tried to do something nice for her, she would ask him for something better. Like he got her a bouquet of roses and she wanted a bouquet of orchids and lily's (they're super expensive by the way). Anyways, the guys were trying to get him to dump her, but Bobby wanted to give her another chance. I don't know why, because she was really not a nice person. She's even mean to me, but that's another story for another day."
Samantha chatted on and on and on. This made Mary wonder if she ever breathed. Then the girl said something that truly shocked her. "At that point dumb Dutch asked the boys who their perfect girl was. Tommy said Justine Bateman from Family Ties, Johnny said Ali (big shocker there), but do you know who Bobby said?" Again Mary did not know. She waited with bated breath.
Looking mischievous, Sam told her "Prepare to be surprised. He said Y-O-U. Are you surprised? I was shocked! But then I thought about it, and decided that would be so sweet. Don't you think it would be sweet if you and Bobby dated? I think you should go for him. Because like, ever since the she-devil dumped him something changed in him. He needs someone good, like you."
Ever since then all Mary could think about was Samantha saying Y-O-U. She could not believe Bobby had named her as his perfect girl. She is still amazed because that's a game changer. But right now she needs to stop daydreaming. Besides it was over a year ago when he said those words. He could think very differently now about her, even despite asking her out on date.
