Darkness. That's all she could feel, utter darkness. Elvina heaved in a breath as she slowly felt around her surroundings, her fingers brushing over something lush and soft. She gently opened her eyes, taking in the towering pillars of gloom all around her. They were mixed shades of purple and black and the moon's gleam illuminated the tops.
Elvina pulled her hands up and pushed herself until she was sitting. Her vision focused and unfocused as she adjusted her eyes to her surroundings. It was in complete contrast to the burning store she had just been in.
What happened? she wondered. Elvina took her time to get up.
Her hands trembled and she took a wobbly step forward.
Something made a loud click and Elvina froze. All the survivor instincts her father had taught her from the Police Academy kicked in as her feet slowly shifted into a fighting stance and the click echoed again.
A hard object brushed her foot and her eyes met the glare of a shining metallic object. Elvina reached out to grab it and immediately the familiarity put her mind to ease. Her hands navigated the conversant weapon and she pulled the cable before it snapped back with equal force. Elvina noted that the bolt of the crossbow was discarded and instead of the typical grey engraving of her name, it was a rose pink which she knew was supposed to be gold. She dropped the weapon to her side and started to look around for any clues as to where she was.
Elvina searched the floor with her hands for any two rocks while keeping her eyes peeled for any attackers. She found a set of stones and fumbled to get them to light a fire. Her dad had taught her to light a fire in darkness but as she struck the stones together, not even a single spark was produced.
"Damn it," she softly yelled, throwing the stones on the floor. She ran a hand through her hair, frustrated at her situation.
Everything around her was unfamiliar. It didn't help that her tritanopia was distorting colors and she had no idea how she would get out of here.
"Wait," she said thoughtfully, "I had my glasses on during the fire, so they must be..."
Elvina jolted with realization and quickly scrambled to find her glasses. Her hands patted the leaves around her and came up with only part of her frame. Dread filled her and she rubbed her eyes, tiredness seeping in quickly.
Elvina felt like crying. Everything was wrong. She could barely tell where she was, everything was pitch black, and she was starting to feel thirsty. It was not possible for things to get any worse.
