The cold hit her with a blast

The cold hit her with a blast. A numb feeling spread through Elvina as the darkness of the river threatened to swallow her whole. She could only tell that she was sinking. As if a weight was pulling her down far below the surface.

Her mind screamed at her to move, to kick, to do something, but she was unresponsive. Every part of her body shut down as the river pushed her around.

Her mouth opened in pain and her lungs burned, air bubbles escaping, as her back hit something hard. The edges of her vision darkened while her body started to give up. She had already lost feeling in her limbs. The coldness was starting to seep into her bones as the river tossed and turned her around like a rag doll.

Like a lifeline, a rough hand grabbed her collar and heaved her up towards the surface. Out of reflex, Elvina's hand wrapped around it andher head looked up as far as it could.

She burst out of the surface, gasping, coughing, and trying to take a deep breath through all the water. The cold air nipped at her skin while she harshly breathed, water spraying around.

"Elvina," a voice next to her roared. She was too busy trying to take a deep breath in to understand the meaning.

Out of nowhere, a rogue wave slammed into her and she went under again.

This time, however, she didn't stay down. Knowing there was a surface, Elvina thrashed against the water, desperate to get a taste of the life-given air above her.

Her head broke the surface again and a hand grasped her wrist. Another hand encircled her shoulders as the river tried dragging them down.

There was water everywhere, too much of it. With every breath, Elvina was taking some water and spraying some out. It was dripping from her hair and eyelashes, obscuring her vision and forcing shudders of cold down her back.

The river struck again. It ripped her away from the person and she screamed, trying to take a hold of anything. Exhaustion was starting to seep in her bones as she struggled to stay afloat.

"Elvina," the voice roared and she desperately looked around for its origin. She took a strangled breath and tried to reach him but the water dragged her down again.

Her eyes stayed open in the frigid waters, staring at her oppressor without doubts. She kicked up again, barely missing a rock by a hair's breadth and broke the surface.

"Kai!" she yelled, looking around until she spotted his red hair.

He was further downstream, looking just as panicked as she was but for a different reason.

Holy shit. That's a waterfall.

Everything was silent for a moment. Elvina didn't hear the river. She ignored Kai's cries. The certainty that she was going to die struck her like lightning and then she acted.
