"Thanks for the lift back. Do you want to have dinner with us, Ally?" Vincent asks.
"No, I don't eat and there are a few things I need to get done tonight." I reply.
"What's wrong with eating? Are you allergic to a lot of things?"
"No. I just don't eat."
"Okay, well as your friend I am asking you for the world, just this once to eat dinner with us. If you don't want to eat, then you can just sit with us. Please?" He begs.
I stare at him sideways before taking my seatbelt off. His smile turns into a grin and I am beginning to hate it. I hate making people happy. But I guess if it's Vincent it's okay. We get out of his car and walk inside. I make sure to take my shoes off outside and not walk in with them on like I usually do. His house is standard for a fox. I hardly remember my old house, but this feels right for a fox like him. There's a small scratch that was covered up on one of the walls.
Strange, my old house had a scratch exactly like that.
We walk through the house. His mum is in the kitchen cooking, as we walk into the living room, she notices us.
"Vinnie, why is Miss Taneta with you?" She asks sweetly.
"Oh right," He stutters, "Ally, this is my mother, Vixin. Mum, this is Alluro. She's a school friend."
"I'm Alluro of fox class. I'm in Vincent's class and I'm tutoring him." I introduce myself politely.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Alluro. Are you staying for dinner?"
"Sure."
"Okay, well we're having chicken, peas and pumpkin curry with rice. Is that okay with you?"
"Anything is fine."
She smiles brightly and bounces off back to the kitchen. Their scents mix in their house. It's comforting, but there's something there that I can smell that doesn't belong there. It's bringing back bad memories. Memories I want to forget and erase from my mind, but if I do that then there is no way in finding the answers I need to find. Answers. Not questions. We sit in the living room. Vincent turns on the tv and flicks through the channels until he decides to settle on the news.
"The royal family of Rayloss has announced that the person who saved the Prince's life was a female animal. He said that her tail was of the feline family, but her ears were of the Canidae family, making detectives question if the saviour was a fox." The TV presenter reports.
"She saved my life. Whether she is one of us or of the Fox class, we cannot punish her for saving my life. She is a citizen of Rayloss. If she is a rightful citizen of Rayloss, then any laws written by my parents and the government is overridden my words said today. Please, Miss Fox, please attend my ball as my guest and I promise you, you will never have to be treated so poorly again." The Prince's voice says through the speakers of the television.
"Detectives have placed a reward for the capture of Prince Clement's saviour."
I looked up when the prince was talking and recognised the golden chain.
So, I rescued the Prince of Rayloss huh? What a stupid prince. I'm not turning myself in then. There's no point in going to his coming-of-age ball.
"I wonder what it's like attending a ball. Dressing up in a tuxedo and dancing with a partner. I guess it would be fun." I hear inside my head.
I look around and stare at Vincent, when I realise it's the only voice I can hear in my head. "You want to go to a ball?"
"You heard me."
"There's nothing fun about it. Just people standing around sipping Champaign and old people showing off how much money they have as well as trying to sell their sons and daughter off."
"How would you know?"
"I had to spy on the royal family for a couple of weeks. They threw a ball." I whispered.
"You what? How? Why?"
"Can't tell."
"Okay."
He watches the news in silence. I ignore everything around me and try to figure out why the scent smells so...familiar. Musk perfume with a hint of pomegranate and lemon verbena. It's there, but it's fading. It's getting overpowered by Vinnie and Vixin's scent. I can't seem to connect that scent to anything I know. Could it be that Vixin uses musk perfume or pomegranate and lemon verbena? Or does it belong to who I think it might belong to? Could be Lujane's. Was she here a long time ago? Is she friends with Vinnie's mother? Could this be...
"Here, mum let me help you carry this." Vincent assists.
He carries a large bowl of curry to the table. It reminds me of something. Something I didn't remember before.
