14. Get over it

"wh...what?" I asked baffled.

"it was just a one-time thing" he filled in.

"no, it was not" I protested.

"yes it was"

"Why would you say that?"

"it wasn't something serious okay!...just two adults ...caught up in the moment" he took a smoke avoiding my gaze.

"Well that's not what it seemed last," I said bitterly, disbelief evident in my tone. "You were something else last night and you're completely different this morning. I don't...."

"well yes...that's what I am saying. Last night was different and today is different. And I don't want anything that happened last night to continue...I don't want anything to continue with you.so don't make a fuss about it"

It was like someone slapped me in my face. This is not what I was looking forward to this morning.

Why does he think like this? Why does he see last night as a mistake or as a one-time thing? Why he doesn't want anything to continue?....is it because of our history together? Is he scared that we will fail together again?

"Ed... if you think that what happened in high school...will happen again ...then..."

"God dammit Hazel" he chided "It was high school and this was just a one-night stand...grow up and get over it"

I was taken aback and I don't think anything could be spat hard like those words did. I could feel the blow in my stomach...and I was confused about what just happened and the way Ed was avoiding eye contact clearly implied he didn't care what I felt right now. He again rested his elbow on the banister turning his back on me and the last shred of self-respect left in me screamed at me and I walked out of his apartment.

'get over it' were the same words I slammed to his face while breaking up with him...was it some kind of revenge? Or a game to get back at me? what was it? Whatever was it...I don't want to know. I don't care now. I just want to slap myself for thinking from my heart to the extent that it gave him the power to break it with just a few words.
