Newt had always been bad in keeping up human friendships, he preferred to stay with his bowtruckles and Nifflers at Hogwarts, he seemed to have a special bond with them. You were different though, you were always willing to find Newt, be with him as he tended his beloved creatures. You were almost always seen together, and you were devastated when Newt was kicked out of Hogwarts after the incident Leta caused. You understood Newt's will to take the blame though, he was always kind-hearted, sometimes too kind for his own good.

You remembered how you used to run through Hogwarts gardens and how the Herbology professor was shouting after you in fear that you'd stomp on his precious herbs. How you were still young and free, you and Leta were the only ones Newt liked as much, or at least almost as much as his creatures.

Now you were regretting on how you never talked enough. You had watched him fall in love with Leta, when you should have told him about your own feelings. You knew he would turn you down, with an awkward chuckle and touching his neck in embarrassment, but at least you would have known. You would have known if he had any kind of feelings towards you. It was always possible you had interpreted those looks he sent towards Leta wrong, maybe Leta was smirking at you when she saw you talking with Newt because she saw something you didn't?

You knew that was you being a hopeless romantic, you knew it wasn't possible. But you should have told him. Then you would be sure about it and move on. But you never got enough courage to do that, until it was too late.

You didn't know it, but as Newt had traveled back home and received a bit of a lecture from his parents and went to his room to unpack his suitcase which would ultimately become his workplace - he realized that he should have told you about his own feelings. He wasn't even sure if he would ever see you again, as you two lived so far apart from each other, and you'd surely find someone else, someone better than him. But he still would have wanted to know if you would even had a chance.

Maybe someday you both would find out about your feelings. But until then, you'd just have to live on without each other.
