they ran for what seemed
like hours
their feet thundering
against the asphalt
before their knees
finally buckled
and they fell to the ground
sides heaving with effort
none of the scenery
looked familiar to them
but they laid there
for a while
anyway
trying desperately
to catch their breath
once they regained oxygen
they pushed themself
off the ground
and slowly began to walk
to nowhere in particular
one foot after the other
every step sent fire up their legs
but they continued on
they just knew
that they had to get away
far far away from that town
far far away from you
so they walked
until they couldnt walk any longer
they lost consciousness
everything went black
they woke to the sound of sirens
flashing lights
and being lifted off the ground
by strangers
their parents
had reported them missing
after they hadn't returned
for a couple of hours
the police found them lying
on the side of the road
while snow piled up around them
so the authorities
called the ambulance
who showed up quickly after
and confirmed that
the frigid air was beginning
to shut their organs down
so they were rushed to the hospital
where they were taken care of
nursed back to health
and finally sent home
so that both their body
and their mind
could heal on their own
