And Then They Died

Chapter 39

Allegra's POV

Vince and I had shut down all security as we made our way back to the tunnels.

We both are walking when I hear two gunshots. My body is pushed to the side as Vince covers his body over mine.

Looking behind him I shoot the guard before returning my gaze to Vince.

I watch him pull his hand from his abdomen where blood drains out of it. Way too much blood.

"Vince, stay with me. I'll get you help." I tell him but he just collapses onto the floor.

Grabbing my arm he pulls me back.

"Allegra don't be dumb, look how much blood I'm losing. I won't make it." I shake my head at his words.

I can't lose him. Not him to.

"I'm sorry for everything. It kills me inside knowing that I hurt you and I just hope you will truly forgive me."

"I do Vince. I forgive you." Despite our fight, it doesn't mean I don't love him.

"I love you Allegra" he pulls out two leather books from his jacket and hands them to me.

"Is this?" I hold them gently looking back down at him and he nods.

These are the books we got when we were twelve. We wrote everything in these. It's identical to the one to have tucked in my duffel bag in my room.

"There's two...." I mumble.

"Roman's and mine....." I nod as I watch his body become weaker.

"I don't want to lose you..... Not you too" reaching up he caresses my face gently before leaning up to kiss my cheek that now has tears running down it.

"Allegra, leave. You have to survive" he tells me and I nod kissing his forehead.

Alarms blaze loudly as we look at each other. We both hear many feet thumping against the tiles heading in this direction.

I stare at him and all I can see is Leo's grey eyes fading into Vince's brown ones. I lost them both.

I lost the only two men I have ever loved.

"I love you Vince. I never stopped. I'm so sorry" I look at him one last time before running back to the tunnels with tears in my eyes.

I watched as he took his last breath and his body went limp. Totally lifeless.

Ace and Octavia look at the blood on my hands and face and Ace turns around punching the wall realizing what happened.

"Vince is gone....We need to leave." I mumble as we all quietly run down the tunnels until we reach back into the safety of the van. We sit quietly inside, none of us eager to go back to our compound.

After a few silent minutes, as if we were paying respects, Ace gets up and starts to drive to the safe house we are staying at for the night.

Octavia and I are both quiet and I open Vince's journal looking at the last entry.

February 3rd 2044,

The truth is I'm a bad person. I hurt everyone around me and I've hurt myself. If I counted how many times I've hurt myself on purpose I would be well into the hundreds.

If I counted how many times I hurt her......
Allegra.

I never meant to hurt you. I love you more than anything. You saved my life.

You gave me a reason to live when I didn't want to anymore.

I know it won't work out. I'll probably die before we have a reasonable conversation about our past.
