"Yo, I still can't believe you're married. Like, living with a girl is big enough, but you guys were already official."I smiled at Luke's comment, watching as Sadie excitedly ran towards the stairs to grab the food we promised to the guys.
I bit my lip watching until the top of her head disappeared down the stairs.
"She's it, dude. Why wait?"
Luke smiled and shook his head, pulling out his phone as his smile grew even wider, something both me and Winston noticed.
"Something funny over there, young Lucas?"
Luke slipped his phone back into his pocket, shrugging casually before laying back on the couch he and Win had just set down.
"Where's your wife with the food, Pierce? I'm starving over here, man."
Although I knew he was just trying to change the subject, he was right.
Sadie was taking too long; the food was pre-ordered and it was supposed to just be left on our doorstep.
I got up from my seat on one of the loveseats and with a little rush in my steps, jogged down the stairs to make sure Sades was okay.
The door was pried open and she was standing in it when I gently grabbed her hip, pulling her back a little so I could open it all the way.
As Jay stood there on me and Sadie's doorstep, all I wanted to do was make him eat the words he spat at me a few months ago.
For him to have been so selfish as to ask me to break his own sister's heart and annul our marriage wasn't something I was easily going to forgive him for.
I couldn't help but want to protect Sadie, and not in the brutish archaic way Jay did.
"Jay, long time, man."
"Yeah... hey, man. How you been?"
I looked down at Saide for a second the looked back at Jay with the most genuine smile on my face.
"Honestly? I've never been this happy."
Jay nodded before darting his eyes back and forth between me and Sadie until they ended up on her.
"Sades, can I uh... Can I talk to your husband for a second?"
✨
"It's a nice space you guys got here."
Jay had just taken a seat at our barely furnished kitchen island, and as I slid him a beer, I knew I had to keep my attitude in check. At the end of the day, this was about Sadie and her relationship with her brother-- all I cared about was seeing Sadie smile, and if I had to bite my tongue and deal with Jay hating me, I'd do it... but only for her.
We both cracked our beers and as Jay took a big gulp, I sipped slowly, trying to find the words that were waiting to spill out.
"So, what's up, dude? I mean... if you're here to ask me to leave your sister again, then man--"
Jay put his hands up and shook his head before hanging it in defeat.
"It's not even like that anymore, dude. You make my sister happy... and that's all I ever wanted."
He stopped for a second and I could feel like there was something he wasn't saying.
"But...?"
"But..."
Jay trailed off and chuckled a little to himself as he scratched the back of his head.
"But I was a jerk, alright?!"
We both gave each other a hard stare before each of us broke out into a wide smile, laughing as the tension seemed to dissipate from the room.
"Yeah, man. I mean-- you were kind of an ass for a little while there."
Jay took a deep breath as he hung his head. He began nodding before he looked back up at me with a somber look on his face.
"I know and I'm sorry, dude-- genuinely. It's no excuse, but, when it comes to Sadie, I'd do anything for her, man--"
"Trust me, Jay, I know. But you can't go around trying to sabotage shit for her because you think you're right."
"Look, I know, okay?! I just-- My sister deserves the best...which is what you apparently are for her, so, I'm sorry, alright? And I'll tell her the same thing. I just... I wanna make things right... do you-- do you think we can all go back to normal?"
