Bucky gasped for air. It was currently 2am, another night disturbed by his nightmares. He could not remember this one; all he knew was the usual. Him being the Winter Soldier off-killing people. The nightmares were so consistent that Bucky would sometimes not sleep. It was an unhealthy habit, but anything to have a break.
He wondered when they would go away if they ever would. Was this his curse? To relive those brutal and gruesome moments? Whatever the answer was, Bucky, in a way, excepted this. But, regardless, he cannot fall back to sleep.
Getting up, he left the room he and Sam were sharing. He slept on the floor, another sick habit of his. With his back aching, he made his way to the kitchen. Maybe a glass of water will clear my head?
Entering the kitchen, he did not expect another person to be awake, especially at 2am. The fridge was open; the other person clearly did not see Bucky walk in. Bucky just stood there awkwardly, waiting for his presence to be known.
The fridge was closing, and the person was Katherine. Seeing Bucky, she gasped. He had scared her. All she saw was a shirtless, metal arm, Bucky just standing watching her.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." said Bucky.
Katherine shook it off and laughed a bit. Even after everything, it was still weird for the two of them to be by themselves. They did not know how to act. Both of them ignored the gigantic elephant in the room, which was their relationship.
Looking at Bucky, Katherine noticed he looked troubled. His forehead was sweaty, and his face was pale. Instantly, she knew he had a nightmare. Katherine knew that look all too well. With her, his nightmares were less frequent. He actually could have a break and sleep.
"Can't sleep?" she asked.
"Yeah."
Walking over to a cabinet, he grabbed a glass and then filled it up with water. Downing the water, it cooled the heat in his body. Katherine hesitated if she should mention him having nightmares. When they were together, Bucky never really talked about them. He would sometimes wake up screaming, and Katherine would just hold him. She never asked what it was about. If she ever knew what the nightmares were about, it was from Bucky telling her. But, this time was different, right?
"Nightmare?"
All Bucky did was nod. Then, he looked down in shame. Like it was shameful to have nightmares.
"You?" he asked, focusing now on Katherine.
"Anxiety..."
Katherine has had anxiety ever since she left prison. It was the overwhelming fear that her life would be taken away from her. To never be able to see her father again. That is what she feared. And Sam and Bucky do not do much but add to that fear.
"Just the feeling that my life will be taken away from me at any moment."
Bucky understood what Katherine meant. At any moment, the Dora could show up and take her away. Take her away from him. It pained him to think about it. But, what was scary is that time was almost upon them. Ayo gave them forty-eight hours; one day had already passed. That means Bucky had less than twenty-four hours to decide on Katherine.
Was she worth it? Did she love him back? These questions were still left unanswered. If Katherine told him she loved him. Bucky would do everything in his power to keep her safe and out of prison. Nothing else would matter.
"What if I can ensure that doesn't ever happen?"
Hearing his words, Katherine looked at him, confused. Was he suggesting running away?
