Traitor ~ Bucky Barnes

Wilfred Nagel

Zemo, Katherine, Bucky, and Sam walked into the container. When they entered, they could hear music blaring. Sam and Bucky had their weapons drawn and ready to fire. Katherine and Zemo, they were not allowed weapons for obvious reasons. Walking around the lab, they found Nagel working, his back facing them. It was clear he did not know they were there. Sam cut the music off, causing Nagel to turn around in shock.

"Dr. Nagel?" said Sam.

"Who are you? What do you want?"

"We know you created the super-soldier serum."

"Get out of my lab."

Nagel just ignored Sam; he went around the corner to be met with the Winter Soldier. He knew this face all too well. To see him in person was scary as hell. Sam picked up on his fear toward Bucky.

"You know who he is, right?" said Sam tauntingly.

Then, turning Nagel to the left, Sam showed him two more people. "This is Helmut and Katherine Zemo. I know you've heard of them, too, right?" Sam was not playing games; they were going to leave with the information they needed. Grabbing Nagel, he walked him to a wall and threw him against it. "You seem like a smart guy. So you better become conversational real quick."

"How about a counter proposal, offer me something better than I will talk."

This is getting nowhere, thought Katherine. Nagel was a little brat. For a simple doctor, he definitely had a god complex. Maybe it was because he was under the protection of the Power Broker. Or because he created the super-soldier serum. Looking at Bucky, she could see even he was getting annoyed by him. Walking over to him, Katherine tapped on his shoulder.

"You wanna do something?" she said.

Bucky looked at her, confused. What exactly more could he do? Katherine realized Bucky did not understand what she meant.

"Use your bionic starring and intimidation skills. You still are the face of the Winter Soldier."

Hearing Katherine, Bucky just rolled his eyes. He was not going to be giving a show like he did in the bar. So, he just stood there, hoping Nagel would talk.

"Hey, we have company." said Sharon through the intercoms.

Sighing, Bucky grabbed Nagel and shoved him into a chair. Putting the gun against his head, he cocked it. Letting Nagel know it was ready to use. However, he still said nothing. Nagel was really stubborn. Being sick of the silence, Bucky shot the gun. Only missing Nagel's head by a few inches. Nagel flinched from the gunshot.

"Okay, Okay." Nagel was ready to talk.

He went on to talk about his recruitment by Hydra. This was because of the fail test subject from Siberia. Then, when Hydra fell, the CIA recruited him. From there, he was able to isolate the necessary compounds from a test subject. Nagel was successful in creating the perfect super-soldier serum.

At this point, Katherine stopped listening. Nagel confirmed his god-complex. He viewed himself as a god. Someone who was all-powerful because of his discovery. They are all the same. People try to create gods among men. Each time, it fails. This could be seen throughout history. Steve Rogers, Red Skull, and now Karli.

Like the rest of them, their time would have to end by normal means. Blood. If you can prove that a god can bleed, then their power is gone.

Katherine walked around the lab. Looking for anything to help her dispose of Nagel. The only things she could see were chemicals and bottles. All of this was useless. Until she saw what looked like a handgun strapped to the bottom side of the counter. Giving no reaction, Katherine looked back at Nagel and the rest. Everyone was too invested in noticing Katherine. Reaching under the counter, she grabbed the gun.

Removing it from the strap, Katherine put the gun behind her back. Now she made her way back to the group.

It would be easy to kill Nagel. He would be another means to end the super-soldiers. But, it was more complicated than that. Nagel worked for Sharon, the Power Broker. To kill him would ruin any chances of Katherine being free. Shit. And it is not like Katherine does not know Nagel works for Sharon. She told her that.

Now Katherine was anxious. Her hand started to tap against her leg. She had to decide: kill Nagel and lose all chances of freedom or do nothing and let him continue his research. This was the dilemma.

Zemo noticed Katherine's hand moving against her leg. Then, his eyes made their way to the gun she was holding. He knew instantly what she was planning. Katherine was going to kill Nagel. But, something was off. She was hesitant and uncertain.

There was only one time where he saw Katherine like this. It was when he told her they had to go to plan B. Before, Zemo only thought Katherine was on edge because of having to dispose of Broussard. Of course, it was much more than that. Katherine faced the choice of leaving Bucky and pretending to not love him. In the end, it backfired.

He always felt guilt for Katherine. Zemo made her kill and brought her into this life. That was his one regret. Katherine should not have to keep making these choices. Walking up to her, he placed his hand on her shaking one. From the touch, she looked at him.

"Shhh, it's okay," said Zemo quietly.

Rubbing his hand up and down her arm, he could feel her relaxing. Then, he placed his other hand on the gun. Zemo slowly took it from her hands. Nagel's life was not going to be in Katherine's hands. It was going to be in Zemo's. He would do it over and over again for her, for his daughter.

Running in the room was Sharon, "Hey, we are seriously out of time here."

Hearing this, Zemo acted quickly.

Bang.

Zemo had shot and killed Nagel. Sam and Sharon quickly pushed Zemo against the wall, holding onto his arm. Nagel fell from the chair, lifeless. He was dead. Sharon looked mortified, saying, "What did you do?"

Sharon looked up at Katherine. There were not any words coming out. Katherine was stunned. Everything happened so quickly. Was she surprised Zemo killed him? No. But, she at least had to pretend.

Then, in a split second, the room exploded.
