I WOKE UP WITH A POUNDING headache. I took a deep breath, making me groan in pain. My whole body felt so sore and bruised. I looked around to see that I was in a hospital room.
And that's when I saw him.
Joshua was sitting in a chair next to the bed, and he was sketching in his sketchbook. He had bruises littering his face, and he had a few stitches from the cut on his forehead. He looked like he hasn't slept or ate.
Joshua just happened to glance up from his sketchbook, and his eyes widen in relief and happiness. He threw the book down, instantly, as his hand cups my face. His eyes kept looking over my face as if he wasn't believing what he was seeing.
"My beautiful, Annie. I love you more than everything," he muttered, making tears well in my eyes.
"I love you."
That was the last thing I said to him. My last words. I remember saying them to him, and I really thought I was done for. I thought this was it. This was the end for me.
Until I remembered how he kept begging me to not leave him.
"We deserve our happy ending so don't leave me, okay? You are going to be okay."
And so I fought as hard as I could.
"Looks like we got our happy ending after all," I cried with a grin on my face.
Joshua's smile matched mine, and he kissed the top of my head, gently.
We are finally free to get back to our future together.
"How are you feeling?" Joshua asked me, tucking a piece of my hair behind my ear.
"I'm doing okay. Everything just feels sore," I replied with a shrug of my shoulders."How are you feeling? You took most of the punches."
Joshua shook his head,"Don't do that."
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion,"Do what?"
"Act like my injuries are worse than yours. I was punched and kicked. Bruises and cuts. You were beaten up and stabbed, Leah. Y-you almost died from it," Joshua replied, quietly, as a silent tear rolled down his cheek. I wiped the tear away as he continued.
"I keep replaying that memory of you on the ground, bleeding out. I keep hearing your last words as your eyes closed. I thought they wouldn't open again, and that fucking terrified me, Annie. I thought I was going to lose you."
