My only promise: angst

Levi knew all too well this feeling. He had been through it over and over and over; to the point where he almost felt numb to the feeling. It was a cruel world, a world where you should be grateful for all you had because no one had any idea whether it would be here tomorrow.

Levi had lost too many people than he could even count but at this point he was used to it; it was one of the roles you had to automatically take on when you join the Scouts. People around you, your friends, some who you even class as family could one day disappear only to have someone new take their place and to have that cycle repeat.

But it didn't hurt Levi to sit and watch his comrades die in the most painful way possible...what hurt Levi more was watching his loved one's go through the exact pain that he had go through.

He watched you carefully on the way back after the expedition. The only thing he desperately wanted was to return quickly to take care of you. He overheard that your roommate was one of those who had unfortunately didn't made it back safely. He knew all too well how you felt. He promised that once the pair of you had made it out of anyone's view and had privacy he would take care of you.

He promised.

The first thing he did before anything else when he returned was go after you, he let you go first before following a few minutes after. Despite being covered in dirt and titan blood his first priority was you and only you. He panted after rushing down the corridor, he stood in front of your door waiting a moment to catch his breath.

He raised his fist ready to knock before he hesitated.

What if you wanted to be alone?

What if you didn't want to be around him right now?

He dropped his fist considering his actions, personally he'd rather take time by himself and he knew how much you respected his own personal space which he loved you for. His thoughts were cut off by the faint sound of sniffling.

"Fuck." he muttered under his breath. He was stuck on what to do with himself. He was unsure on how to console you, he wasn't good with his own feelings never mind others.

He inhaled sharply rasiing his first once again and this time knocking softly on the wooden door, immediately the sniffling paused.

"It's me." He said softly, whispering just loud enough for you to hear. The words lingered across his lips "Can..can I come in?"

There was no response to his words. He wasn't surprised that you didn't reply to him, he took it as a sign that you needed time for yourself. But then just before he turned to leave the sound of the door unlocking stopped his movement. He waited as the door creaked opened to reveal your figure, eyes a painful red and tear eyed; you too had yet to clean yourself up. You had no energy to do so.

Levi's heart ached at the sight of you, you didn't have to say anything at all to him.

He understood.

He clenched his jaw waiting awkwardly for a few moments before he grabbed your hand gently, pulling you in. At this point he didn't care who saw, all he wanted to do was care for you. Just at the touch of his skin and his warm scent tears suddenly came from nowhere as you buried your head into his neck. His hand slightly hesitated before rubbing circles your back, attempting to soothe you.

You tried to hold it all within you on the return back not wanting to head back into the privacy of your own room. Tears spilled upon him, your body not able to do anything else but cry for your loss. Crying didn't even help to explain what you were going through, nothing expalined the numbness you felt.

You had calmed down a few minutes later, you and Levi were both situated on your bed. He sat upright whereas you laid on his chest, his hand soothing your head. The faint feeling of him stoking your head made you sleepy given the fact that you also tired yourself out by the crying.

You stared at your roommate's side of the room. Bed still perfectly made and ready not ever knowing that they would never come back to rest on it again. In a matter of weeks a new soldier would move in and create their own space. You looked at the shelves filled with many of their books and belongings. Your heart ached remembering the times you complained about them having too many things.

Your body shook at the thought of never being able to see them again or scold them for pointless shit like that. "What do I do...with all their..." your voice croaked not being able to finish the sentence.

Levi sighed looking across the room catching onto your words, eyes scanning over their things. "Well." he began his tone soft opposite to what it usually was around the others, "We'll pass it on to their relatives."

You shut your eyes not wanting to even think about the thought of telling their family members what had happened. Your body was tired, head throbbing and eyes sore from crying.

"I'm tired Levi." You mumbled.

He knew. You didn't have to say anything more because he understood. "I know." he too was tired, tired of this world. How many more deaths would he have to go through just to secure freedom of humanity?

"I just want to...sleep...forever." you exhaled, your mind slightly imagining a world without titans, a world where you and Levi were together in peace. Not having to worry about how much time you had together before it all went wrong.

Which was why having a relationship in the scouts was such a dangerous idea because you could lose each other at any given moment. But you understood the risks and took it as you went along which was why you cherish evry day you had with him.

"I don't want you to leave." you whispered shutting your eyes to the sound of his heartbeat which slowly soothed your headache.

"I won't." he spoke his tone was still faint yet it felt more like a promise to you despite the fact that he knew he couldn't promise anything in this world."I wouldn't leave you behind."

"Good." you mumbled beginning to drift off, your heavy eyelids shutting. Levi noticed nudging you slightly before you fell into your slumber.

"Stay with me tonight." It was more like an order rather him offering. "We need to clean ourselves up first and then...I promise you, you can sleep."

Because that was the only thing he could  promise in this world.
